runner vs. pickup

ok, I've been reading a good bit and I've still got a question...........
In order to advance the timing do you change it with the distributor or the actual timing belt? I'm still not completely understanding this. I see there are some down falls with over heating and lean motors but what else.
I'm a picture guy if someone can point me to some pictures to explain.

Also it will tend to be a little "jerkier" on the gas pedal, and your emissions will change, NOx will go up.

Alrighty guys..........
We set the timing back and it may have changed it a hair but not that much.........
So, we decided that that isn't the source of all this power.
I was wandering, what upgrades can be done to the cams on these engines that could cause this? We thought this motor was completely stock but not so sure anymore.

I bought this truck and it has definitely got some power. Accelerated in 5th up hills on the interstate running 75.
What is the need for the timing light and where would you install it? Next tank of gas I'm going to run high octane and see if that corrects the lean code.
Might turn the timing back just a hair.
