IF you are unsure about how to pack bearings properly (I learned from an old mechanic) Search it on youtube. IIRC I have seen a few videos of guys showing you how to pack them correctly. This job sucks, you don't wanna do it twice.

its not hard to get the rotor off the hub the hardest thing for me was the nuts on the front of the hub those were a pain to get too. and sence i did not want to tear up my rotors by puttin them in a vice i wraped it in a towel and used my legs to hold it while i broke the bolts holding the hub to the rotor repacking the bearings is tedious not very hard get some grease in the palm of your hand a good amount and smack the bearings into and pull it sounds like a sex postion hahahahah but smack and pull till the bearings have new grease coming out of them and before you put the bearings back in cover them in grease you dont want to see the bearings when you put them back in

if im not mistaken there should be 6 bolts that hold the hub to the rotor or is that 4wheel drive only?

An easier way to hold the hub/rotor when you're removing the bolts that hold them together is to mount a wheel & tire on the hub with a couple of lugnuts. Lay the tire on the ground so that you see the back of the rotor, kneel on the tire to keep it from turning, and use a breaker bar on those bolts. It is really easy to keep it from turning this way.

Both. I have a 2wd, and it is same as 4wd.

So my 4runner is back up and running.

While I was working my uncle cleaned out the bearings (Using 6 cans of brake cleaner to get all that stuff out) then let them dry outside, and when I got there, they were all dry and I just had to repack the barrings that were inside the hub since we didnt remove the oil seal. Then put the new rotor on, put it back on 4runner, then put grease on bearings that were first to come out and last to go in, then put it all together.
My uncle said not to drive highway for a day or so to give it time to work in, otherwise i guess the grease will be thrown around.

And I thought I had a pretty good writeup for anyone needing to do this. Not much of a write up, but simple step method.

I will post pics of it all on there and together in just a few min.

edit------------

here is a pic. thought I had one of other side or mounted, but guess not.....

Of course that is after I packed the bearings and put it back together right before putting back on..

Thats basically what I did. ITS ALOT EASIER.
Happy you had posted that before or would have probably played h*ll trying to get those.

Had to get 2nd rotor off as fast as I could to get person at auto part store to break that one away from hub too, got all apart in bout 20-25 min. Thought I was setting a record time. lol

CV Boots

Howdy,

I'm curious how much more work it would be to put some new CV boots on while I'm doing my rotors. It looks like it would be easy, but I haven't gotten in there to know, and for all I know it could be a royal pain. Thoughts?

Any help is appreciated!

i use a vacuum packer for keeping food fresh to pack bearings. put a handful of grease in the bag seal it and it smashes the grease into the bearing. never used this method with old bearings though...
