Roll over repair thread.

I rolled my truck two days ago at about 10km/h. The damage appears to be only aesthetic, though I've noticed my valves sound different and will be re-adjusting those tonight. Unrelated, probably, but who knows. I dented up much of the passengers side and I am going to be replacing, painting, sanding etc for the next few weeks until I have a truck that looks alright again. Follow along if you like. Suggest if you can. I haven't done this before.

First question, I have a couple dents in to panel I will likely retain including the rear quarter and the roof (just above the A pillar). It will be several weeks before I can deal with that bit, so what should I do in the mean time? Spray bomb it to keep it from rusting?

I was swerving to hit a small kitten when the back wheel caught a pothole and it just tipped. No one was hurt. I had the kitten for lunch.

The structural integrity of the 4Runner is pretty impressive. There will be pictures of the damage, though none of the accident itself.

PS. I was avoiding a dog that dashed out in front.

To be honest, a role over at ~10km/h is pretty gentle, it just tips and then settles. The sides of a 4Runner are pretty rounded if you look at it and as a result, its not as bad as it sounds. My neck and back are messed up from an accident in which I was hit by a dump truck in another car and this didn't even aggravate it.

snow sucks but was soft landing. just popped the door dent out and all is good. didn't even brake the side mirror or any glass. no bady damage othere than a dent in the door.

So you didn't actually roll it, just a flop.

Couple new doors, fender. Well that looks like the only damage, besides the area just above the rear fender. Least none of the glass got broken!

Instead of spending money repairing your 4runner, buy a car/truck for a DD and make it into a trail rig since your committed already.

I need some painting advice. Right now I have a white door off another 4Runner. I picked both doors up for $70 (nice eh?).
  • I stripped the old door of the upholstery and all the internals. Now I have a door shell.
  • I then power washed it and degreased it.
  • I then took a wire brush and removed the paint where there was any kind of rust bubble. I sanded those down and put "Rust Mort" on those area. Its rust converter.

I have several questions about what to do next. I plan on applying a body filler over the converted rust to smooth it out. Is this right? Do I prime it first?

After that is done I have tumbler and a tack cloth. I will use the tumbler first and then wipe it dry with a cloth. Then I will use the tack rag.

Over top, do I need primer? What about sealer, or is that the same stuff?

I'd say yeah, use primer to coat the entire door.
Here's a tip- get two different colors of primer, with your truck I'd say the rust (brown) and black, then spray a coat of each. When you start block sanding, you'll wear off the top layer of primer first so you can find any high-spots/imperfections easier.

After the primer, do I need a sealer coat?

Will primer in a can work?

Do I apply bondo before or after the primer?

I've never used a sealer after primer.
canned primer is ok, but best results from 2-stage primer
bondo before- if you have to use it.

There are a couple imperfections on areas of the door that I want to practice on with bondo before attempting the outside of the car on the roof and rear fender.
