rocker shaft assembly (22re)
Does anyone know if there are locating dowels or anything else that would prevent one from removing the front rocker shaft tower (22RE) by simply sliding it forward (with the two head bolts removed)? I want to remove the intake rocker shaft to install shims behind the #4 intake rocker, and if possible, I'd like to avoid removing the head.
The engine was making a loud tapping sound that turned out to be associated with the #4 intake valve. I currently have a shaved down nylon hose clamp (rated to 275 F) acting as a shim between the rocker arm and the rear shaft tower, and the noise is completely gone. While the nylon shim is working fine, I'd like to replace it with some washer shims.

yes, there are little sleeves between the head and the rails, so no you can't just loosen them and slide them...
but...
you have to remove the head bolts to even budge the rocker rails
once you loosen the head bolts, you will need to replace the head gasket
just get a head gasket kit and do the entire process, otherwise you'll just be left with other problems
