Ring and Pinion, Locker Questions from Germany
Hi,
I´m Jan from Germany. I have a Volkswagen Taro. Its the same Car as a Toyota Pickup 2WD 1ton with a 2,4l Diesel engine.
Now my questions.
Original there are tyres 195/80 R14 mounted. Now I want to change it into 31x10.5 R15 tyres. There about 10cm or 4 Inches bigger diameter. Original there is a 41/10 ring and pinion. Which size should I choose that there is original gearing or a little bit shorter. Where could I buy it?
Also I would like to have a Locker. Its my daily driver. But it sucks if you are in sand or wet grass. Which one I should choose? Where could I buy it.
Now I´m rebuilding it. I have allready the complete Downey Suspension installed.
Excuse my bad english.
Thanks for help!

Willkommen!!
Ok that's about all I can remember.
I would recommend 4.56:1 gears for a 31 inch tire. This is what I did and it works very well.
I would also like to recommend the Aussie Locker. It's an easy install and works well in most situations.

If it is an auto go higher like 4:88. If manual Junkers88 is right on, but 4:10s are common and I run 31's on my trucks with 4:10's with no problem.

Its a manual transmission. The Diesel engine has only 80hp. I have a tow bar which can pull 2ton. And the spread of the gears is to wide. Also on highway without a trailer in the 5th gear it doesnt accerlate anymore.
Who is manufacturing ring and pinion and locker for 7.5 diffs?

send ZUK an email (gearinstalls@gmail.com)
he knows everything about gears and could point you in the right direction...
his website (www.gearinstalls.com) has tons of information for you to check out...
as for the gearing, id go with the 4.56s too... they work well in our 4000 lb. srufs/4runners, so a 1 ton diesel should be perfect... also because you dont have to lose any power going thru a transfer case, you should be golden...
as for the locker, it depends on what you want...
if you want more streetability, id go with a limited slip... like the ones found in early 80s supras... factory toyota limited slip and factory toyota reliability...
now, the one thing that im not too sure about is wether or not the 1ton differentials are the same as the normal toyota trucks... but like i said, ask ZUK... he'd probably know...
if you never want to get stuck... ever, get an Aussie locker...

Personally I would gear that truck lower then 4.56. I would throw at least 4.88 gears in there.
It will tach about 300rpm higher and you might just be able to use 5th gear
Plus those meats are pretty chunky = more resistance. Go with 4.88 gears.

Your English is much better than my German!
This is kind of hard to answer for most of us on this board as diesels are not imported into the USA.
Not sure what the torque and power bands or the transmission gearing are like on the diesels ... the trucks with petrol engines that came stock with 31's and manual transmissions (R150 usually) had 4.56 gears, which tachs 3000 RPM at 70 MPH (112 KPH). That might be redline for your diesel!
If it's truly a "1 TON", then you have the 8" diff - same as the 4WD, but the pictures look like a 7.5" diff. I THINK those are the same gears as a Supra/Soarer.
As for lockers, see the FAQ at the top of the "Offroad Tech" forum. I would imagine that selection for the 7.5" diff is very limited.

Partnumbers of the complete diff should be 41110-35202, an ring and pinion 41201-39677 (41/10), axle housing 42110 35400.
What diff do I have?
My original tyres have a diameter of 26.5 inch and now I want to install my 31 inch.
What are the right gears to make it stock or a little bit shorter?

I have 5 lug.
The original Tires are 195R14C. I looked at the Kumho homepage and they are listed at SUV & Light Trucks with overall diameter 26.3 inch.
The picture shows how it looks in Germany? They have tires like grinding discs...
