Hello, I am new here and own a 91 4runner 3.0 5spd. I just picked up a 1990 4runner with a 3.0/auto and an engine "knock". I am also a part time rural postal carrier here in northern Illinois. On many of days I wish I were in my 4runner because the weather sucks.

When I get this "new" 4runner running again I am hoping to set up some sort of dual pedal or maybe even dual pedal and steering controls for delivering mail. I know that overseas the 4runner or "surf" is RHD. I am wondering if anyone has converted one of our LHD runners to RHD. That would be the ultimate conversion.

I have done a search and cannot find anything on this topic and am sorry if there was and I missed it.

 

i have never seen it done but im sure u could if u got a rhd parts rig and just swaped the steering and dash over, i would think it would be a long job but pretty straight forward

I know the idler arm and and the steering gear use the same holes and are interchangeable. I was just wondering if there were bolt holes for the RHD pedals and possibly a knockout for the steering column in the firewall? A couple of other carriers drive Jeeps and I will not lower myself to that point. I would be happy to start with just the RHD pedal assembly if it fits.

 

The "knockout holes" would not be there in an American model 4runner. You will have to do measurements and so forth, plus the steering box will be on the opposite side. Not really worth the effort unless you really want to do it.

 

you could also look into importing a hilux surf from canada. they import em into canada from japan with low miles.

 

I would like to work with what I have now. I heard it is a PITA to get one of those titled here in the states. If it is impossible I guess I will have to rig up a dual pedal set up and possibly down the road add a second steering wheel to the passenger side.

 

I was hoping to at least bolt in a RHD pedal set up and connect it to the existing LHD components.

 

on this subject, i have a problem.

i just cannot understand why some countries even have right hand drivers.

i fully understand the metric system, and also standards more accurate system, but why on earth do we have left and right hand vehicles ?

and

is the gas, brake, clutch pedal in similar areas?
is the stick reversed?
wheres the ignition key?
are the blinker/wiper arms on different sides too?


and,
why do you want to do this?
perhaps so you can just wear out the passenger side to match the drivers side

RHD cars are for countries where they drive on the opposite side of the road.

you can find rhd vehicles, takes some digging though. there is one in my town, see him around every once in a while. next time, im going to follow him and ask lots of '?'s!

The biggest problem that I would see with trying to do that with factory stuff is the airbox that is on the passenger side under the dash.

 

here in bear creek theres a subru legasee man i can spell them but yeah its a right hand drive and thats the only one i've seen ever!! and no its just a little punk a$$ kid driving it hey i think i can take him for ya lol!!

 

we had a couple of rhd wranglers come in to my shop from the local water district. they had us cut the giant curb off the lower door opening and add it to the door so they stop tripping in and out. both auto. controls were normal on the column. pedals normal. one had a LHD shifter though. aka, the thumb button on the left. so you had to use your finger. i think its cause they broke it and had to get a US replacement. they trash those things. cool to drive though.

i know that alot of 2wd pickup guys do this. more so in the custom vehicle spectrum. i can get some contact info from a few that have done it. ive heard its not that hard. worst part would be the dash. go custom. or ship the shell from a RHD over from japan. most of your steering components should be able to be swapped side to side. the airbox would be an issue, but you might be able to port through it with some PVC pipe and caulking.

My uncle in laws' girlfriend has a right hand drive jeep cherokee. She baught it because she is a mail carrier and got tired of leaning through the car to drop mail off. I'm not sure exaclty how she got it (through a company that does importing) but it was weired to drive it also had a nice pioneer deck in it but the fm radio would not work because they use different frequencies over seas and the numbers wouldn't go high enough I noticed I tended to want to hug the shoulder to make sure there was enough room for other cars, as I was on some back side roads with no stripping.

 

There are tonnes of RHD vehicles here in BC, Canada. They are all in really good condition. A Hilux Surf diesel goes for about $7500-9000. I've heard the 3.0 diesel has head gasket issues, so check that out.
