I had AAL's on old springs and the thing rode like the axle was welded to the frame.
AAL's suck BIG TIME. DO NOT WASTE MONEY on them.

after you relieve those torsion bars a good place to start spending a little money if you want to is shocks. I can't tell you how much shocks do for ride quality. others here might have recommendations as to brands.

If you want NO body roll at all; leave the anti-sway bar on it. It's not going to make the ride stiff, it's only restrictive over big bumps or dips. Soften the shocks & relax the T-bars & you'll find your better ride. If it's too spongy, stiffen everything up just a bit; just be sure to drive it around a bit after adjustments so everything will settle in.

I just swapped out my original steering stabilizer on my 87 4runner for an Old Man Emu and it made a world of difference for ride quality. I have a slight crank on the T-bar to level out the add a leaf in the back and rancho shocks. So far this is the best $100 bucks I spent on my truck. I have owned the truck for over ten years and just kept putting it off. Now that my leafs have settled for a while I may take a measurement and twist the T-bar back.

First off, you said you had an 86 4runner - these rigs had torsion bars up front and LEAF's in the back. In fact I believe it has the exact same suspension as his buddies 91 truck.
To get the best ride, handling, and performance, lower your torsion bars a little bit and consider getting a set of Bilsteins for all 4 wheels if you want better cornering/handling, or if you want better bump absorption, get a set of stock (OEM) or OME (old man Emu) shocks (but you'll have a bit more body roll).
Now for the rear you probably want to get a set of new leaf springs & bushings. I recommend OME Medium duty Springs for this application.
Because these trucks are compact and not big and wide like a full size they are handicapped from the beginning but my truck with Bilsteins and OME Heavy duty springs rides extremely well with several hundred pounds in the bed, but a bit firm when unloaded.
