Resealing a third member

My rear third member has some anal seepage between the housing and the case. Can I pull the axles out only part way and remove and reseal with RTV.
I have never seen any oil hit the ground, but I rather fix this before it gets worse.

The vent is clear with no blockage and I want to refill my rear diff with redline

drain the gear-oil

pull the third

scrape off old seal, rtv whatever is on there.. reaseal with RTV, seat it.. let it cure for an hour, torque the bolts, few hours later refill with oil, should be good.

No problems. Just make sure all surfaces are clean and DRY before re sealing.

I think if you try to half ass it it will make the problem worse...

Not to mention that to take the axles out partway is the same amount of work to pull them all the way out. Just do it once and do it right the first time.

well you still havta pull the axles out enough to get the 3rd out. i just removed mine 2 times to do a lockright. so heres my advise, learn from me. go outside now and start spraying your brake line connections and bleeders for the rear, spray it for weeks. then calll toyota, and order the 2 prebent brake lines from them, they are cheap. mine lines twisted when i lossened them. take the lines off, take the axles out, then do your gasket, silicone or toyota gasket, then put axles in put your brand new lines in, bleed the brakes.

might not have the problem i did if you dont live in the rust belt.

Yes, you are going to have to drain the gear oil and clean the sealing surface well, wipe with brake cleaner to get it nice and clean. Torqueing the bolts properly is key.

PB blaster on the brake lines and a brake line flare nut wrench for the 10mm, not a normal wrench.

Gaskets are diffs are a PITA IMO and too easily screwed up. I'd recommend RTV.

Some good advice in the quoted posts above. Take it to heart.
