I'm in the midst of trying to buy a 4 runner but need to know if I'll be able to get anything out of my pickup. Tell me if you think the following numbers really mean anything with regards to resale value on an old rig.

2500$ purchase price
500$ gears
250$ locker (Aussie)
100$ rear coils
110$ ball joint spacers (Marlin Crawlers)
100$ shocks
700$ front and rear rock bumpers (Marlin Crawler)
400$ tires (5 Treadwrights in 31/10.50/15)
600$ or so in injectors/O2 sensor/gaskets etc
100$ Supra afm and parts
220$ t-case cross member (Budbuilt)
100$ new windshield

Total comes out to 5680$. Is there anyway on earth that an old rig like this is worth that to anyone? It's got a camper top on it that's in great shape. All the glass is great, only a couple dime sized surface rust spots, very few dents none of which are larger than the palm of my hand. The interior is outstanding although the dash has a crack in it and the seats are a little worn. Everything works including the AC and all the little dash lights.

If I can get the runner for 2500$ and sell my rig for 5500$ I'd have enough to justify the switch and still be able to begin a new build with the runner.

Thoughts?

 

keep all your parts for the runner
youll only get what that truck is worth.. id say 3 grand back to stock looking

 

Depends on who you try and sell it to. Someone who wants to wheel it, you can get more out of it. I'd say what the vehicle is worth plus about 30% of your aftermarket parts.

 

I'd buy the 4Runner, transfer over the parts, and then sell the truck. Aftermarket parts don't retain their value at all it seems.

 

you have got a super clean looking '86...but I think you have got a 3-3.5K truck. as mentioned before I would try to buy the other truck, swap over your aftermarket parts.
Matt's assessment of 30% on your Aftermarket parts is probably pretty close. I see rigs on Pirate that I would love to have that they part out after a while because they make more parting it out.

If I tried to sell my '81 Trekker for what I have into it would never sell. You basically never get out of a vehicle what you have put into it unless you got got a great deal and did all the work yourself or have connections....

 

Your best bet is to trade it straight across. Don't expect more than $3000 out of it though.

Out here that truck may net $4000 since its rust free for the most part. The xtra cabs are a premium out here for sure.

 

If it was me I would separate the truck and the parts. Use the parts or sell them. As a package you will be lucky to get anything out of the mods unless you find the right buyer.

 

I would take your locker, gears, tires, cross member and bumpers off and try to get $3500 -$4k.

 

It's painful, but you have to keep in mind that as soon as you install a part, it is now a USED part. Even removed from the truck again, that locker is no longer worth $250, it's more like $150 max. And that's stand-alone.
Now, there is some "value" in having a part/upgrade already installed, e.g. getting it w/ a truck and saving the time doing it.
However, teh bigger problem is that even at used part prices, the whole is not the sum of the parts... this is because in many cases, a buyer might not really care about some extra part or two or three.
E.g., you may have spent $500 on the tires and shocks, but I could care less b/c I'm just going to ditch them for bigger tires and different shocks. So they hold zero "value" to me.

 

I'll trade you straight across for my 4runner.

But yea, seriously I would return it as close to stock as you can and keep the aftermarket stuff for the new 4runner or just trade me straight across, as is.

 

I like to call my 4runner the "bottomless pit" I just keep spending money on mods. I figure as long as I have it I may as well keep improving it.

I would sell it but I will never get anywhere near what I have in it . I guess I will have to keep it forever.

I have been looking for a 2nd gen extracab maybe we should trade?

Well thank you for all the advice and offers for trade. In the end the bidding went higher than my pocket book could handle so I guess it wasn't meant to be. I'll rat hole the money and keep saving and looking for a clean SFA 4runner later on down the line. After waxing the truck and giving it the once over for looks I think I'll keep it for a while. Hell I'll probably just dump more money into in next spring anyway.

 

I think we should make an appointment to meet and do a trail or two so you can teach me how to wheel this thing.

 

I think you will be glad you kept your truck. Having both a 4runner and an excab I would have to say I like the excab better. The best part of the 4runner is removing the top in the summer.


Actually it would be the other way around, I don't really do much wheeling.
I am an avid cyclist so my seat time is mostly on my bikes.

I just installed a new timing chain on the 4runner but I still need to install the Aussie locker that has been sitting in the garage for the last year.

I would like to do some easy trails if you are up for that.

You got a BA, clean truck Junkers, thats well on its way. Don't get rid of it.

 

That xcab looks mint, I'd trade up straight across for it if you were in my area as I want an xcab but the ones left in my area are rustbuckets.

 

junker and nm, when either of you do seriously consider moving them, let me know! just give me a bit of a heads up so i can massage the budget.
