Replacing the Rear Wheel Bearings
Howdy all, this is my first post here, but I've been lurking around for quite some time now. I'm pretty sure my rear wheel bearings are bad and am gonna take it upon myself the task of replacing them. I have two questions, first off, are the bearings typically sold in sets of two, or are are they sold per wheel? Secondly, how much should I expect to pay a machine shop to remove/replace the bearings from the axle shaft? Thanks guys, I appreciate any info!

They are sold individually, but you should replace them in a pair.
Make sure you replace all 6 seals too (3 per side) or you will encounter leaks.
You will also need new C-clips and lock collars. Trust me, you don't want to skimp on this stuff. And pressing off the old bearings will ruin those parts anyways.
As for cost, it really depends on the shop. It's really not hard to do, but if they don't know what they are doing, it can cause you problems in the end.

Well, there's not a whole lot of play in the wheel or oil spillage into the brake system, but there's a ton of noise, especially at higher speeds, and after carefully listening to the truck with a stethoscope I found that it came from the drive side axle housing. I'm going to go ahead and change both sides out though. My main concern is that I don't get ripped off at a machine shop, I've never had to do anything like this so I really have no idea what to expect to pay.

If you bring the axles to the shop they might do it for about $50 per side for labor. If you just bring them the truck plan on twice as much or more. Either way I would buy all the parts ahead of time from Toyota and bring them to the shop. Also, make sure the shop is experienced in changing Toyota rear bearings. I've seen shops that can screw up stuff pretty bad.

I'm planning on just bringing in the axle, it seems straight forward enough of a job for me to take on. No need to pay someone else to do it. So do you guys recommend on buying the factory Toyota bearings and seals then?
