Is it easier to lift the engine, or drop the front diff ?

Dropping the front diff is easy. I would guess that it's easier than raising the engine. What vehicle are we talking about, by the way?

 

The truck is a 92 3.0L x-cab, long box, 4x4

I've got a 3" BL on my truck and I was able to unbolt the engine and just barely jack it up out of the way. If you don't have the BL I'm not sure you could get it high anough anyway.

As already mentioned dropping the front diff isn't that bad of a job just make sure you don't over-extend your CV's.

And do be sure to get all of those plastic pieces of the timing chain guide out of there when you drop it.
