Remove Parking Brake Cable from Handle
Hi All,
Im in the process of replacing my (front) praking brake cable. It had snapped right near the handle. It actually broke where it attaches to the rod. I cant seem to be able to remove the old 'snapped' cable. It looks like I need to turn the rod so that I can freely remove the old cable tie(round thing, marked with red arrow in pic below). But I cannot turn the rod enough to get the old wire out, it is blocked by this L shapped 'small rod'. I tired to pry the 'small rod' out and even tired to unscrew it, but no luck! Just need to turn it a little bit more to get the old wire out!!
How do I get the old cable from the handle out, whats the trick??

that handle "stop"...the piece sticking out not allowing you to turn the handle fully...is pressed in...on one side of the case there should be a small hole to pound ouf the "stop" piece.
you'll have to remove the parking brake light switch to be able to get it to go down far enough..
after that it's all really easy lol
i can have mine out in like..2 mins lol..i've had it out about 10 times...i can't find an extended cable ebrake cable though that isn't rusted in half.....

As above, just tap the stop out and you will then see how to get it from there. I thought the stop was threaded the first time I was in there, so, I sheared it off trying to turn it. Nope, it is pressed in. Good thing the dealer sells just the stop.

park brake
If I remember correctly, there is a tab behind the mounting bracket. this tab will release your handle to pull the old cable out. I found out when I salvaged the cable and broke the handle from the donor vehicle, that the stopper brakes easily. Don't brake it, and don't buy a new stopper!

I don't know what everyone else is talking about in this thread but 4Reigner definitely has the right of it. You shouldn't have to take the whole handle assembly out of the cab to do this, just make sure to detach the pulley from the other side of the firewall before pushing the handle in all the way.

This thread has been helpful in hooking up my ebrake.. i never had the handle installed before in my truck so i didnt know what the "stop" looked like..
I know this is a long shot but,
Does anyone know what the part # would be for just the ebrake stop??
UPDATE:
Part number for the "pin" is 46114-20010 $6 in canada.

If you are pulling the stop out that engages the parking brake light switch, you are doing this repair incorrectly.

All those tabs by the handle do is allow you to put the handle back in.. When the handle is pulled all the way out , the levers are spring loaded stick straight down and stop you from sliding it in..
So you have to use the 2 levers from the picture to lift them and slide it in..
Then put your ebrake stop / pin back in..

I went out to Rockauto.com to look for the front part of the cable. I could only find listings for rear right and left. I broke mine last week and need to fix it soon as I live on a hill and I an sure the people at to bottom don't want the 4runner in their living room I have a 92 V6 4runner if that helps any at all.
Thanks,
Greg

thanks 4Reigner, One thing i have learned working on cars, with things like this. there is usually a right way to do it. Your tip saved me from screwing something up. good info. I didn't have to pull the lever, just removed the pully and the light switch. Hit the tab forward and boom! awesome.

I was working on mine and got stuck for a few hours with this. I made a few easy to follow pics for those who, like me, couldnt figure out how to release that cable:
Hope this helps someone out there
