relocating stereo
Has anyone relocated their stereo higher in the dash, to where the ash tray and lighter are?
I'm thinking if I got the stereo up higher, it would be easier to manage it while on the road and I could do something "better" with the center console area.

on the <89 trucks and <90 4Runners... there's just about no where to put the stereo other than in the stock location, under the arm-rest between the front seats (if you're lucky enough to have front buckets) or in the glove box.

Well, the HVAC controls are up high enough that there is no way a console-based cupholder is going to get in the way.
I guess the question is more along the lines of "how much junk is behind the ash tray that would block a stereo install up there?"

My brother used to own a 71 Volvo 140, which really had no proper spot for mounting a modern stereo system, so I installed the head unit under the seat, then he made a bracket that fit under the dash where we installed the face-plate. The faceplate could be flipped up out of the way, completely stealth, or you could flip it down to operate the radio. Flip a small switch beside the faceplate, and the CD came out between your legs. It was an awesome setup.
Some cat5 cable, and you can connect the faceplate and the head unit together.
