is it possible to get the back half of a ext cab and fab it on to my regular cab. has anybody done this or known of anybody that has done it or even if it is possible thanks.

 

lol why go through all that trouble..wow paint, weldin, bodywerk, measurements, its all gotta be squared, plus the frame is shorter no?, why not just find a new truck, and swap all your parts on it

 

an old friend of mine did it. NOT reccomended. it wasnt as stable, it was VERY hard to put up on a lift or rack, since the bed was out about 4 feet longer than it should have been, and he had a lot of trouble reregistering it.. the VIN didnt match up with the original body setup, so he had to go through this long period of 'inspection' as a custom vehicle. its interesting, but i wouldnt try it unless you plan on making it an offroad only vehicle.

 

I hate to sound insulting as this is the only way I feel I can convey my point, but don't be stupid! Buy an xtracab truck.

 

Your best bet would be to find an Extended Cab and swap it over. It would be less headaches and everything would look right. It has been done before, check out some of the other boards or forums.
Easiest thing though would be to buy another truck.

Best bet would be to buy an excab, add a body mount to your frame, then shorten your bed.

It might be more work then its really worth.

 

Extended cab models have a longer frame as stated above. If he is going to do all that work, he should build something custom instead of just a stock extended cab. Maybe take another cab and make a 4 door or something. I have also seen small camper shells that only go a foot or two over the bed. I am not sure if those are custom or not, but that would give him extra room without all of the work. With a little cutting and good sealing, it could be very similar to an extended cab. Maybe not the best idea, just my $.02.

 

didn't they do that very thing on extreme 4x4 last month. it was on a ford i think.

 

they did do that on extreme 4x4 but its an old episode. in order to get stability and structure out of the new cab it was basically a reg cab with a box on the back, and a division inbetween for stablilty.

you're way better off just buying a new truck.

 

i saw one guy who cut out the back of his cab, attatched it to the bed and modified a 4runner topper to fit. it looked like it worked perfect and looked pretty awesome.

 

i really think it wouldnt be that bad to swap it over. it would also be more work to swap everything over to a new truck. ive got a 3.4l in my truck and ive worked all of the bugs out of it to. i think it would be cool to have a short wheelbase ext cab and a 4 foot bed. to make it nice and rigid again i would put a cage in it that should work.

 

You could swap an extended cab onto a reg cab frame. 2 new body mounts and about 20 inches out of the bed would be all that it would take. Only problem is, if you were to run tires any larger than 32 or 33's, when your rear tires stuff into the wheel wells, they'll hit the cab since the back of the cab goes 7-9 inches into the wheel well.

What you can do and nobody has mentioned it is just to cut the back of the cab out on the Reg cab, take the extended cab part of the truck and graft it onto the back of the cab, but use part of the existing bed. Notch the extended cab part and weld that to the bed rails and seal the cab off on the bed floor. Then you'll just have to remove the front of the bed and weld the floor section shut.

 

So, there is/was a Moab based toyota forum that I stubmled across years ago. Someone had a first gen pickup and removed the back of the cab (the bed side) They then took another donor cab and mated them together, creating a psuedo quad cab. It was pretty rad. Very well done, seat in the rear, fully welded seams. It looked like it was designed that way.

If I EVER did anything involving trying body swaps or things like that, it would be to buy one of those right hand drive 4 door trucks in my gen, and converting it to left hand drive.

 

I was going to address that link, but didn't want to search for it at work. I had emailed him directly when I had contemplated the extended cab swap. We both discussed just grafting the extended cab extension via the same idea he took.
