Red and white wires off distributor

Does anyone know which wire is the positive and negative off a 1986 carb'd 22r distributor. I'm installing an MSD 6A and don't know how to test the polarity of the magnetic pickup. Thanks!

neither is hot nor ground, per se. they send a signal to the ignitor.

courtesy of

MSD 6A without ignitor:
Heavy red wire = Battery 12V +
Heavy black wire = Ground
Small red wire = switched 12V (beige wire originally to ignitor)
Small white wire = NOT USED (make sure it won't ground on body)
Small purple wire = violet wire from distributor
Small green wire = white wire from distributor
Small orange wire = + side of coil
Small black wire = - side of coil

it was also mentioned that you may have to retard the distributor 1 tooth to get the timing back down to spec
