I’m looking for some help diagnosing a 22RE I recently rebuilt. 1993
Symptoms:
Cranks a lot to start but idles well.
If I slowly give it gas, it will rev and drive but If I quickly stab the throttle, it bogs down, falls on its face, and sometimes nearly stalls. I can just barley give it gas
Backfires through both the intake and exhaust when reved
No major idle issues.
Codes:
21
52
What I’ve checked/replaced:
Base ignition timing checked with a timing light and appears correct.
Replaced TPS.
Replaced AFM (air flow meter).
Spark plugs checked.
Injector wiring harness was removed during the rebuild and reinstalled. I’m wondering if a wiring issue could still be present.
Vacuum hoses have been reconnected, but I may have one routed incorrectly.
New injectors
I blew there the fuel filter and lines to make sure they wasn’t stoped up and cranked over and had good flow
Engine Information:
22RE engine.
Recently rebuilt.
Engine was apart and wiring/hoses were disconnected during the rebuild
Could injector wiring being connected incorrectly cause these symptoms?
What should I check next for intake and exhaust backfiring on a rebuilt 22RE
Has anyone seen codes 21, and 52 together cause this type of bogging when the throttle is opened quickly?
Any help is appreciated. I’m trying to avoid throwing more parts at it and would like to diagnose it correctly.
>>How did it behave before the engine rebuild, and did it do any similar behavior?
Basically trying to see if all of your non-rebuild-related components are known-good.
(i.e., distributor, spark plug wires, coil, ignition module, injectors, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, etc)
>>Do these codes come back after clearing them?
(Clear them by removing the EFI fuse for 30 seconds)
>>Are the ground connections still good?
There's one on the firewall behind the head,
one under the distributor,
the big one on the block (which of course your starter is using),
maybe more locations as I can't remember off the top of my head.
>>Your fuel injector wiring harness connectors are all connected correctly?
Just recently, my buddy realized he had mixed up the connectors for injector #1 and the coolant temp sensor on his '94 2wd 22RE manual pickup.
No surprise, he said it ran much better once he sorted out those 2 connections.
Don't remember how he said it behaved prior, but I don't recall mentions of backfiring.
>>Cam timing for sure correct? Valve adjustment isn't way off?
