rebuilding engine?

I was thinking about redbuilding my engine this summer. I have a 1988 toyota pickup with a 22R-E engine in it. it has 156,000 miles on it and running funny. Im wanting to rebuild this because I am going to be making long distance trips this coming year and I dont want that much trouble.
Anyways, has anybody done this before? What are the benifits for doing it? estimate price if im doing it all myself? how long does it take?
and are there any websites you can link me to where i can get more info.

Thanks a lot

- John

PS. also if there are any websites that you know of that sells stuff for my 22R-E engine id be interested in them.

has anyone rebuilt a 22re? LMAO dude, this is a toyota forum, of course most people here have. lol. i havent cuz i havent needed to. though i do plan on rebuilding it at the end of summer so i can put a high performance cam in it. and if you do it the RIGHT way.... have the block tested, cylinders honed, etc etc, prob lookin at maybe 2-3 weeks of down time. i think. note: mine has 260,000 miles on it (actual mileage is around 300,000 due to tire size and speedo miscalibration) and still running fine. whats it doing? maybe us folks here can help ya save a lot of time and money, it might just be something simple

If its just 'running funny' to you, have a good yota mech give it a going over. That $ will be well-spent. Dont get too deep if you dont have some experience and tools.

Running funny can be non engine related............let me rephrase that, may not be internal engine. I know a guy that rebuilt his 120,000 22re just to have it still run funny (bad brake booster, told him it vas vacume related but noo....sorry). Just dont go into it expecting it to be the cure all.

You are only at half life, if that, of a 22re. If it is running "funny" it is because something is out of wack not because it needs rebuilt. Go after the problem. You may cause more problems then you fix by taking it apart. Nothing is better then OEM stuff that is in there alwready.
