Rear Tailgate Gutting Question - Rear Window Regulator Elimination?

Last night I went to gut my tailgate of all of its internal parts to make it lighter now that I have a soft top. What I did not realize is that all of the linkage to open and lock the door is mounted to the window regulator.

Anyone find a work around? I guess I can fab up a bracket using the regulator mounts to hold the lock and latch linkage but I was curious if this has been done before.

Its not really a big deal as the motor and glass are now out, but if I can get rid of it that would be great.

Thanks.
