Rear End Roaring
Ok so today i changed out my rear pinion seal, that was fairly simple and for a "first for me" it was really simple. Still not sure why people kept telling me to take it to a shop to do...
Regardless. That not the issue, the seal went in seamlessly and is holding fine, when i put the nut back on, i tightned it a little more than where is previosly was...
Reason being, where it was staked before it wasnt very tight. So its like 1/8 of an inch tighter...
But my problem comes from my rear end ROARING at me. Before i even touched it, it would roar whenever i was on the gas, if i let off the gas it would stop but as soon as i touched the gas it made the noise again. I drained all fluids and added new 80w90 valvoline synthetic gear oil. I was hoping all new fluids would help, but it hasnt. It is making the same noise if not louder.
I jacked the truck up and had my brother put it in drive for me and apply the gas so i could pinpiont the sound. It sounds really bad sitting there watching it, but it is def. Coming from the rear end. Other than the seal leaking ive had no problems from it. It sounds like it could cause alot of problems but the sound hasnt changed in 1000 miles.
1990 toyota pickup 22-re 4x4 4.56 gears
help!
Edit: I said its been making this sound 1000 miles, but thats as long as ive had it, when i first got it, it wasnt "driving" but ever since ive had it road worthy its been making this noise.

dude,
i think you have a pinion pre-load issue or incorrect shims.
sounds like it needs to come apart before you grenade it.
definitely should not roar at you.

i very well may have fubared it. Good news. It doesnt leak!
Bad News: I have a lion in my rear end.
It has always made this noise, (havent had truck too long)
completely full of brand new gear oil. Should i go back out and take the driveshaft off and set the preload where it previosly was (still roaring there too)
or..just set the POS on fire.
it drives fine, does fine in 4x4, pulls fine, accelerates fine, just talks too much.

replace your U joints and see if that helps before tearing it all apart again , I had my rear U joint on the third go and it sounded just like what your describing replaced it and it sounds like tires humming only now.

on my BB now so excuse the short txt. When ur driving and you let off the gas pedal the sound goes away but as soon as you touch the gas you can hear it again. I'm pretty sure its in the rear end. Almost like a grinding noise when Ur on the gas.

if there is any play in the U-joint (up and down, side to side....shouldn't be ANY movement except for the circular rotation.) then replace U-joint on that end, might as well do both.

another way to test.
take rear driveshaft out...drive down road in 4wd high to see if the noise is still there.
do the same by taking the front out and leaving the rear in...JUST to be sure it's FOR SURE in the rear.

sounds like the rear end was not set up correctly. Seriously. when you took the driveline off the pinion, did you check to see if it could move inside the rear end. If it has any in/out play or left/right play...you need to have it redone. As a guess, I'm going to say its one or both of the pinion bearings that need to be replaced.

I'm leaning more towards tje bearings. The ujoints are good to go. No play at all.
Reason I think it is the bearings is you can feel it on your heels when driving. But the one hearing I could see looked ok.
Much cost involved to get hearings replaced?

thats not too bad, i think i could get the bearings done myself, i just want to make sure its done right the first time. Screwing up a rear end wouldnt be something i would be looking forward to doing.
Its bothering me everytime i hear it. I think i might try to make it to the shop friday and have them listen to it and see what they say.
Its just really depressing doing the rear pinion seal my first time ever just to still have a problem lol.
Good thing though...I can now look at the rear end and not see gear oil! And i dont have to smell it from being thrown up on the exhaust. either!
when i translated my door code, it says i have 4.56 gears...
i want to run @ minimum 33" tires. is that gearing good enough? No rock climbving or anything just going to be mud. I was looking at new gear sets, and say mostly 4.88 & 5.29's nothing 4.56...

OK just did my pinion seal about month ago and the samething happened to me except I didnt have the roar prior to the pinon repair. What I did was go back and tighten the pinon nut to the required torque, which I believe is 90 ft.lbs. and fixed the problem.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. If tightening the pinion bearing pre-load did nothing, then it leads one to believe it's the carrier bearings. NOT a u-joint however, sorry to say. I've seen/felt a few bad ones in my time. NEVER heard one make ANY noises though, let alone a roaring sound. Maybe I just haven't heard a REALLY bad one though...
