rear bumpstop replacement

I took my truck in for the 50N relay rod replacement.

The guy doing the service work is a friend of mine, so I knew that I wasn't going to get taken for a ride (I read the horror stories).

Anyhow, he called me last night and asked me to take a look.

Looks like my ball joints need to be replaced, along with replacing the bushings in the ideler arm, rebuild of the PS box (leaking).

But the bigges project is going to be the rear bumpstops.

They have rusted out and are rattling around inside of the coil springs.

Anyhow, has anybody replaced these?

I am thinking I may have to cut the factory bumpstops out and fabricate new ones.

Any clues?

Thanks!!!

There is a single bolt that runs through the middle. Stick a socket in there and just unscrew it. But of course to get to it, you'll have to remove the coil springs.

On second thought, how are they rusted out? Maybe you just have to tighten up the bolts.

The base with the captured nut that the bolt bolts to is sitting at the bottom of the spring bucket with the bumpstop attatched to it.

I think that's quite common. Mine are like that, and so are the ones on the two early '90s 4Runner in my local junkyard (I wanted to get a set from there to replace mine). I've just left mine sitting inside the coil spring until I decide to replace them. At least it will provide some cushionning the way it is and not allow the spring to bottom out.
