reading codes without a scan tool

reading codes without a scan tool
i'm pretty sure you can pull codes on a vehicle without using a scan tool on these, please correct me if i am wrong. but i used to be big into jeeps and i know that with them if you cycled the key 3 times you could count the sequence of the check engine light to pull codes to diagnose the vehicle. i was wondering if i could do the same with my yota. i have a 88 4runner with 22re. if someone knows how to and can explain it to i would greatly appreciate it. thank you.
