Thanks for the reply RBX.
I did some more research and I can tell everyone that the post 95 counter gear will not work. People have tried it with no success and I can see in photos the differences with the gears.
Pre 95 counter gear on right (stock R150 on the left) picture from user JAR3289 in his 1UZ swap thread.
And here is the counter gear for the 96+ r150 on the right
Talk about frustrating for pre 95 R150 owners! Ugh!

Hi guys.
I have a R151 from a 2010 Hilux KUN26R that I'm wanting to carry out the 5th gear mod.
I have cracked open the case but not 100% sure what looking at, is it worth going any further to try and get the 5th gear or am I going to need to chase a bunch more parts than just the gears?
RBX - how did you go with your 06 model box? Did you end up succeeding?
Looks like the 06 R151 I have, you should be fine with getting the parts. You are as far as you need to tear it down to get both the gear and counter gear off for replacement.

pre and post 95 R150
Yeah, unfortunately. Got confused looking at all the part numbers I guess.
So yes, I do have a post-95 gear set for 5th gear. And a post 95 (99 actually) 5 speed box. Its from a 99 I bought for the motor.
Of course, the post 95s have the Left Hand drop transfer case. Which also goes to a slightly diffferent tail housing on the R150; so the rear support bearing is different size,
and the shift levers are also different. Plus the nut or clip on the end of the shaft. Just stating this here so if someone ever does a search.

I wish I would have seen this sooner, I could have saved about three weeks in shipping time from Japan. I was following the thread over on Pirate and hadn't thought of looking here.
Anyone have a post 95 r150 torn down at the moment? Specifically, it needs to be a top shift transfer case. IF you happen to have an extra I would be delighted to trade some green backs on an agreed amount. I need a pic of the inside of the tail housing with a rule in the pic for scale.
little back story...
my build is at a pace comparable to glacial, but no fear, I need it completed by next august, easy peezy right? Well, at the moment I cannot get a transmission adapter to fit the R151which has a forward shift housing. Evidently, the bolt pattern on the output side fits a 2005 Tacoma transfer case and I need to buy an adapter to fit the r1fa crawl boxes. I have an older v6 to the gear driven boxes, but it’s not going to work for me(I tried and failed to mate the pre 95 tail housing to the post 95 gearbox). Since I need to buy an adapter plate I called Marlin and after a helpful discussion the gentleman on the phone informed me that I need an adapter from a 2005 gen Tacoma. And Marlin is out of them.
then I started thinking, why not switch the tail housing for a top shift if I need to buy an adapter anyhow and I could avoid the weird tripe stick forward case thing(thanks Ian). For packaging, I’d prefer a top shift setup since that was stock, all the stuff lines up.
the doubler is going to use the radesigns triple stick linkage, and I was/am setting it up for forward shift and I’ve already clearance the tunnel. I need to get some pics up and update this stuff.
Wow thanks for the quick response. Would you mind laying a tape measure or ruler in front of the housing and snap a pic? Or if you could tell me the OD of the bearing that fits in the collar. Your pic makes me think it’s a smaller bearing than on my output.
Thanks!

I know for sure the rear output bearing is 59mm. Finding out that is was bad prompted the 5th gear upgrade as well as the replacement of the rest of the bearings and synchros. We did measure it with digital calipers to verify since there is also a 72mm bearing iirc and since i am on that 94-95 bubble I wanted to make sure I got the right kit.
Good info! Thank you. I’ll have to measure my bearing, but I think it’s the larger bearing. Just a quick look through my pics and I think it’s the smaller bearing. Now I need a top shift tail housing to make sure it’s the same bearing size.
thanks again
Let me know if you need some other pics or measurements, bearing/seal kit is supposed to be here Wednesday so I'll be at the shop on Thursday to drop off all my parts. Hopefully I don't need anything else for the transmission. Now if I can get the new sway bars from Sway-a-Way that have been on backorder since April 🤬
That’s a great question, and I have no idea, you’d have to cross reference other transmission part numbers or contact Aisin maybe they could help since they made the transmissions. I am pretty sure you can use the same part numbers I did IF you have the post 95 style gear and synco. If it matches the pics in this thread you should be good. Again, I have no idea if this will work though.
Since I cant find that pre 94 counter gear by its self, It looks like its easier to get a whole r452 and swapping in my ax15 case halves and main shaft? I already need to rebuild my ax15 so its not a big issue. The only issue I see is the input shafts being different. Does anyone know if you can separate the input gear from the shaft?
I can’t answer your question, but I’d look for rebuild videos or forum threads for an AX, R150/R151/R154/R155. Actually, if you go to toyodiy.com they have parts diagrams you could use to determine if the gear is removable. You’ll need to enter a vehicle in the search that has the R452 trans.
