R151F swap into AT 4Runner

Hi guys,

I know there's got to be an article or two out there on swapping these, but for the life of me I've been unable to google one up.

"r151 automatic toyota swap"
"r151 install 4runner"
"r151 install 4runner -rebuild"
etc, etc. Urgh!

Any links highly welcome!

I'm mostly wondering how the ECU/trans computer is affected, and what size/where to cut the hole in the floor pan so I get it right the first time. And trim - which trim works best.

First of all you need to find the R151f and the 23 spline transfer case that goes with it. If you want this to be like a factory setup for the r151F you will need to find the 22re bell housing for the r151f ( they are getting scarce) , you will need the 22rte flywheel and clutch (9 1/4" as compared to stock 22re 8 3/4"), You will need the brake and clutch pedal assembly, clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder out of a manual truck (84-88) or a manual 4Runner (84-89) and the trim for the manual from these years will fit.
It's a pretty straight forward swap, but depending on whether you want to do a hack job or make it look like a factory installation, there is a fair bit of wiring you need to deal with.
The engine ECU and the Transmission ECU are seperate units, so if you unplug the 4 wires that go to the transmission ECU, the engine one won't miss it. Having said that there are 2 wires from the cruise control computer, one to the neutral start switch and the other to the Ect computer or O/D relay. Your reverse lights and are controlled by the neutral start switch, you will have to install wiring to the reverse light switch in the manual transmission. For safety, so that your truck will not start in gear you will have to install the clutch switch in the start circuit, there is also a clutch cancel switch in the dash that should be wired up. 4wd. indicator will have to be rewired, right now with the auto your circuit is wired from the switch in the transfer case, to the Ect computer, ECU and then the combination meter, so you will have to rewire this circuit once you remove the auto.
Your best resource would probably be this site:-

Good overview, thank you.

Got everything from flywheel to tcase except for th crossmember sitting in the garage. Probably go budbuilt, and 4.7 Marlin in the single case before putting it all in.

Looking for an article on the rest of the details you mentiond (which helped since i didnt realize some of the more intricate 4x4 details like the indicator) so I can slap this in over a weekend instead of relearning thing people already know.

22rte inmates are currently helping me with a boost problem. Definitely know their RTE stuff.

For a straight swap and you did say that you are using a single case, You can use your existing x-member. The 4x4's auto or manual are all the same.

Phildelfino - the top link was gold, thanks dude.
The bottom link isn't standalone.

Love to get the other links you have at home please!

The mechanical looks straight-forward, done my share of trannies and clutches. But some good tips in there, like d-shaft length.

Looks like I'll only need shifter boots to get the interior looking decent. And the ECT switch can become my offroad light switch or something.

The details on the wiring are still a bit light, and is the part I'm most interested in. LOL It's either very easy or a PITA and people are just happy to be done with it. ;-)

My goal is to be able to drive it when I'm done, rather than need to take a few more days (or weeks since I'm generally looking for used) hunting down parts.

Thanks again guys!

Hope this helps and is timely.
