R150F tranni removal FSM questions

I'm working on a 1995 base model 4x4 truck. The only FSM I've found is for the 95 4runner. It suggests I support the front differential and remove the SET BOLTS. What and where are the set bolts and is this really necessary on this truck? (drive shaft already out)
The FSM also says to only remove the side mounts of the STABILIZER BAR but makes no mention of disconnecting the Links to the suspension which leaves it in place. Seams to me bar has to be removed and simple enough. Any tips or imperative info?

if you're removing the trans, you dont necessarily have to remove the sway bar since unbolting the sway bar mounts from the frame will allow the bar to drop and pivot out of the way. removing the bar though does give you a little more room to put your arms up to work wrenches and ratchets and stuff to reach stiffener bolts and such.

I don't see any particular reason to support the front diff though as it hangs off the frame.

I pulled the trans off my 88 over the last few days to replace the clutch and didn't have to brace the front diff, and the IFS is pretty much the same from 86 through 95.

Sway bar was easy enough to remove with deep 14mm socket and working alone sway bar out of way was one less thing to juggle. Differential was non factor but still curious what FSM is referring to.

I just pulled my R150 about a month ago for my diesel swap. Just remove the starter, both drive shafts and electrical connections. Put it on a transmission jack of some kind and unbolt the bellhousing bolts and slave. Take both shifters out. I took mine out with the x-member attached. Unbolt it and slide the tranny back and drop it. I have a body lift on mine so you may have to take yours out at a different angle. Here is a pic of how much clearance I had to give you a comparison.
You might replace the rear main while you are in there.

Hey Powerstrokejoe, I'm getting ready to do my clutch..it looks like you did not have to remove the exhaust pipe. That would be great if I didn't have to. The FSM says you have to, but of course I would rather not. BTW, do you need to drain the engine oil in order to remove the rear main seal?

1. Remove the clamp from the exhaust pipe holding it to the bracket that's bolted to the transmission.
2. Unbolt and remove the bracket from the transmission(it's easier to remove the transmission with the bracket out of the way).
3. Remove transmission without removing the exhaust pipe.

No, you don't need to. You might want to if you're going to remove the retainer to replace the seal(which you don't have to do).

Nope I didn't have too. I can have my tranny on the ground in a little over an hour. Its not a hard job at all.

Sounds encouraging! Thanks! I've got the r150f tranny and the FSM and everything else I've read says you have to 'rotate' the tranny 45 degrees clockwise to remove it. Sound weird and daunting. I don't understand why you would have to do that or how?

Rotate the tranny 45°? No...you do not have to rotate it AT ALL...that's total BS.
