R150 second gear

Howdy.
I am hoping I can get some feedback on this.

In process of trying to rebuild a 5 spd R150 (from a 94 3VZE).
Inspecting stuff I found the second gear with some damaged(?) teeth. Are they really chipped? I don't know. There's a fourth one over on the other side of gear, but it doesn't look as bad. My Q is "What do you think?"

And although I have no idea how long they'd been like that (I never drove this vehicle), any thoughts on how they'd have gotten this way?

Biggest problem that I knew of was that this tranny would not go into R so easy, IIRC (did find the detent ball was gummed up in the int' plate. Brake clean etc, got it to finally come out).
