Quick Locker swap Question

Im trying to swap an Aussie locker into my 88 4runner diff. I bought a whole third member with 5.29 gears. I know swapping the front over to 5.29 would be better in the long run but dont have the $$$. MY question is can i pull the locker with the ring and spider gears unit and swap my 4.10 ring gears on to it? or is that to simple... would i then have to redo the backlash?

u can just take the 3rd out of ur runner and using the 410 gears and housing and put just the locker in replacing the open diff, u would need to check ur backlash before and after u do it and make sure u get them right, also i would paint the gears to see how its meshing just to make sure u have it all set right.

You also have to change the pinion...

Anytime you pull the ring gear and pinion apart, you should check the backlash..

Check this page out.

Hey thanks for the links. amazed at how much time has been put into that site for others benefit. I got one question though. The backlash is the slop between the ring and pinion ... right? so ill have to measure it before and after on my 4.10 third that the aussies going into, and not worry about the 5.29 backlash? when swapping the ring gear do i need to it a specific way, or just bolt it on and torque to spec ?

the ring and pinion are machined together when they are made. You can't use a 410 pinion on a 529 ring, or even swap brands.

Normally, you check the backlash with a machinists dial indicator. I've always done it by feel and had great results. I still painted the gears and checked the pattern to prove that it was done right.
