question on automatic transmission
i have an 86 4runner with automatic transmission. ive only had it a couple of weeks. my question is what makes the truck downshift? i noticed my passing gear cable was unhooked when i first got it. i tried to hook it up and it was about 2 inches too short. so i extended the cable. physically it feels like it should work (slides back and forth in the cable housing). but it still wont downshift. and while trying to accelerate, even when i floor it, it is in drive at 15 m.p.h. i also noticed that there are a bunch of sensors unplugged on the motor, but there are no plugs that match up to them. any ideas? thanks

The transmission has its own computer, its located under the front of the center console, between that and the shift cable, thats how the trans knows when to shift. It sounds like the last owner did there best to disable things so it wouldn`t shift properly, so once you get things hooked up properly and figure out what sensors are missing or bypassed and get all of that right, then things will hopefully start working properly again.
