Question about high output Alternators.

I'm in need of a new alternator, thought process says upgrade while your at it.
The local Toyota Guru at a local shop says he doesn't/hasn't had good luck with them, but said he does like and sell the stock ones?

What do you guys think and where/which alternator would you get?

i went with the stock. it might be worth it with the winch, or if you had a big stereo, etc.

Thanks guys, wow 3rd one! I've found a few places to to buy some but I just was curious to everyone's luck with them. I don't want to spend $300 on a Hi - output alternator that just lasts 40k.

I think it'd be ideal to find another toyota alt that could be used without too much custom bracket work. Searching around the other day it looks like newer camry's have 100amp alt's, highlanders use 100 or 120 amp units, the tundra's and sequoia's even bigger. The camry unit is interesting to me just because there have to be a friggin ton of them out there, found a bunch for $50 on car-part.com. I guess I should just get one and see how different the size, mounting, wiring all are.

I think he meant it's his 3rd Stock Alternator, and that he was wishing he'd gone with the high output.

There are are few options

If you have a NON AC motor - get the alt from an AC one
22RE I think that bumps ya from 40amp to 60amp

Then there is the MR2 swap - I think that nets ya 80amp?

THen you can get
a rewound alt in a stock case
a GM case adapted to 22RE
HiPo NipponDneso Alt (OEM)

Im running a $$ 130amp NipponDenso alt...

wrangler power products

Send yours to Boyle Future Tech in California to be rebuilt.

Molly and I have both had ours done, and they are AWESOME. For $118 including return shipping, they upgraded mine to like 140A, making 60A at idle (which is more important for our trucks)

Yes, I meant im on my 3rd stock one... 1 of them died from overstressing is my assumption, the other 2 died from bearing failure. Whenever I address this, I'm going to mount it up as high as possible, I think muddy water killed one of them.

And I do wish I had a higher output.

The problem with most "hipo" alternators is the same problem with HiPo motors..

The items sell on "Peak HP" or int he case of alternators - 200amps!!!!

BUT the reality is 200amps do you no good is the alternator only puts out 200amps when the MOTOR is spinning at 5600rpm...

So - what you need is a DECENT idle performacne and amps at say 2500rpm on the motor (fast idle to rcharge the batt when winching)...

That can be done but its expensive (I think is more windings with a thinner wire = more copper = more labor to wind = more $$$ )

ewong - Boyle will build it however you ask him for the same price. He had to try a few different setups to see what was best for mine. They provide a "cert" showing the output at various RPM's

Sorry - I didnt mean to imply that Boyle was not reputable...

I was responding to the OP's comment that the Yota Tech calims to not have had god luck with hipo rebuilds.

Like anything else - you tend to get what you pay for.

i think he tends to stay fairly busy his name is out there as one of the best places to go and so far i have not found any bad reveiws about him. and if anyone has seen TC's truck in person you will be able to figure he needs alot of juice on the trails esspicially with those light force lights, basicly the power of 2 suns on the front of the truck.

Actually, the 8 - 55W rock lights are what necessitated the need for the upgraded alternator after the truck died coming down Moab Rim ....

I used Boyle for the 135 amp upgrade to my stock Yota alternator and LOVE IT! It came back looking brand new and works great!
