ok i just put the head onto the new 22re block on my engine stand. Im putting new timing chain and guides on now. How do i match up the valves to the piston? I was told to put crank key at twelve and cam at twelve and the two silver links should match up to timing marks on gears (whick it does). I just want to make sure this is right?

Just line it up! Everything will be fine as long as they are both aligned...good luck!

 

If you got your motor that torn down... well for next time, install the front cover (chain etc) first then the head.

Not totally neccessary but makes a lot more sense since the cover is wedged between the pan and head. Also when you install your HeadGasket (like in the above pic) you are suppost to put a dab of RTV between the HG and where the cover and block meet at the top. Otherwise oil leaks typically happen since the cover and block never meet 100% flush at that point (this is in FSM to btw).

But to answer your question. The timing chain has two bright links, one you align with the indent on the lower sprocket, the other you align with the indent on the upper sprocket. And yes, the CrankShaft needs to be aligned at TDC (0 deg) with the #1 piston at TDC. (like in the pic)

Then the cam will only align one way (since the upper chain sprocket only can go on one way).
