i decided to quit abusing my oem steering system a few months ago, i was constantly boiling it over and the pump really hated my guts. enter hydro assist, as most of us do when we hit big boy tire sizes. i wanted to test a few things, so i went ahead and ordered a ram kit, lines, and a drilled/taped box. i went with the trail gear kit. reasoning was that my box already had 250k miles on it, theirs was new. i installed the ram and new box and routed the lines. while still waiting for a high flow pump and over sized reservoir to show up from PSC i decided to take the truck out and test power assist with the factory pump. i will say, it handles pretty great on the road. the ultimate steering stabilizer. the ram cant get sufficient flow at idle or low rpm's though, so youll really feel it struggle while idling or not in the throttle enough. i had an issue with the steering linkage slapping back and forth, and ended up having to rotate the end links in opposite directions (suggested by TG) to fix the issue. im sure this will lead to a shorter life span for the end links. my PSC kit arrived and i wasted no time getting it installed. now, be aware, this "kit" is advertised as a 22r specific bundle. it is nothing of the sort. basically generic components and a DIY hose set. i ordered the pump mount for low range, and had to get a reservoir mount from Sky. youll need to hack off the little brake line t mounting bracket from the master cylinder studs to make the rese mount fit. the kit does NOT include any kind of after market cooler. i called PSC and spoke with them (real nice fellas) about boiling temps and recommendations on a cooler. they said "we always have to recommend a cooler, but your oem one might suffice for your needs". anyways i ordered one of those 12' tube style cooler on ebay, dual pass. i have the system plumbed up at the moment with the oem "cooler". i may run it and see what happens. one other thing i suggest doing is buying some quality abrasion wrap for your ram lines. i dang near rubbed a hole in one of my lines just testing the system in my back yard. you can get this spiral wrap at a local hydraulic line supply, or amazon im sure. last thing to note is that you will lose the vac idle up valve when swapping to a high flow pump. no big deal, just remember to cap off your lines at the manifold, and one at the AC idle adjust in my case. the high flow pump also call for steering fluid specifically and not ATF like the toyota pump.
