So I got all hung ho putting my re together and forgot to put lube on the oil pump gears will I be ok just cranking it without the coil connected to prime it?

 

All I have ever done is assemble with oiled parts. I wouldn't hesitate to crank it without the coil connected. You should be fine.

 

It will defiantly help to prime the oil pump VIA cranking the engine without starting it since you are already at this point.

-Preventing damage/accelerated wear.

-But the oiling system on the 22r is pretty quick to build up you shouldn't have any issues.

Just always remember for future repairs....

-ALWAYS PRIME THE OIL PUMP!

 

when I assemble I pack it with petroleum jelly. Helps prime it super quick and it wont drip out like hyperlube or lucas oil stabilizer.

 

it may also help to crank it for pressure with the plugs out, right before you fire it.

on the 22re, I like to pull the valve cover and flood the valve train/timing chain with the full oil fill amount, right before it gets fired.

that will fill up the pockets underneath the camshaft with oil... if I recall correctly, some or all of the cam lobes dip into those pools of oil on every rotation(?)

I think that there is an oil galley plug underneath the passenger side engine mount, so if the engine is still on the stand, you could lay it on it's side and put oil in that way, but i'm not sure if it would backfill the oil pump area... what it might be handy for is as an input, for one of those oil pressure accumulators.

 

Now was this a new oil pump or had you washed it squeaky clean??

If it is completely dry it could be interesting .
