Cool Preparing for mud racing... Suggestions?

Have a 88 toyota PU, 4 cycl with a 4 inch suspension lift and 33 inch tires. I am going to hang with the boys this year at the mud races. What mods / equipment will best prepare me anf my truck to be competitive? Currenty have swamper radials all the way around.

Is there a better tire to use in mud only? Boggers? Can the engine handle that roating weight under load?
Should I do lockers? Front, rear or both?
What else can you think of?

i would try to put a snorkel on or put the air filter in the cab and lockers would help a lot and some paddle tire on the back would be sweet

Small Block, 38" boggers, lockers front / rear, relocated radiator to the bed, confederate flag, and a GIT-R-DUN sticker in the rear window.

If your planning on hanging with them, a 22r ain't going to cut it.

Depending on the lift, remove the lift block in the rear and go all leaf springs.

You aint gonna be able to hang without a v8 and at least 35's and a big ol lift.

These trucks all had the stock 22r or RE in them and did really well...

Of course, then there was this guy. He had a V8, Rockwells, and probably 44" boggers...

Of all the trucks there, these seemed to perform the best:

Notice anything in common about them?

You know what they say, beauty really is in the eye of the beholder...

I was thinking big lifts, big tires, and (can't tell from the pics but) big horsepower...

there is one guy who has a 3rd gen pick-up with the 3.0 and calls his truck ColdFire up in Central British Columbia. and he beats most people up there who have big ford engines. and he has about 4" lift and 35" Super swampers.

I think with proper gearing, a good size lift and lockers your 22re Toyota will do fine.

The one advantage you have over full size is weight, and I would take full advantage of that, make everything fiberglass. I have a 77k5 with a built v8. Thing would run thru hell if I told it to but slow down at all and it sank like a brick (I think with 3/4 tons I was nearing 6000 pounds) weight decrease increase power to weight ratio, lowers PSI on the ground, and improves handling and breaking.

Oh an 33's wont cut it. I say do at LEAST 35" ground hawgs (i used to have tsls, and if you are stuck going forwards your probably stuck going back, might as well have it all one way.)

For serious mudding a set of cut boggers is the only way to go if you need it to still be DOT legal. If the street isn't an issue tractor tires.

Strip the whole truck down to bare neccesities. Lighten your weight, lock ATLEAST the rear, have good tread that bites, tight suspension, waterproof everything electrical, run an electric fan with a master switch inside (turn it off when you hit the mud), protect the radiator from the thick mud, and have a strap allready tied on the front or rear so when you don't make it, it will take less time to get you out of the way and less time for the crowd to laugh or poke fun at you. Good luck.
