It was a risk, pretty stupid looking back (especially if water had gotten in), but riding with friends and the spur of the moment took in. We passed a older gentleman (around 70-80 maybe) doing the same thing. I guess you are never too old ha ha.

I am leaning more toward long travel for mine. I love the stance and look. Planning on replacing my mismatched fender pretty soon once I save up enough for fiberglass. What are you building yours up to be?

I'm planning on swapping out my engine for a Turbo Diesel (not decided on what specific engine yet) once it decides to break down (past the point of cheap repairs), but with only 207,000 miles now I think I still have quite a ways to go. Which is probably good, this engine will hopefully last me through college and far enough into my career path that I'll actually have the money to do a decent swap job.

Well... I've already put LOTS into this thing in the realm of "COMFORTABLE DAILY DRIVING ADVENTURE WAGON W/DECENT WHEELING CAPABILITY FOR IFS and that does 95MPH-----22RE" ! lol.

Things that are important to me are;

1. FIRST AND FOREMOST..... "reliable".
2. COMFORTABLE and WARM... For week long trips out into the high desert where I can sleep inside, COMFORTABLY and stay warm while at it(This is why I'm in the process of doing new 1/2" Panels in back with full insulation in the inner panels, Floor Insulation, etc....)... Also insulating the front half of the cabin as well.
3. Along with Comfy and Warm, I think it's very important to have "practical gizmos, gadgets and resources", like High Output Inverters...Eventually - Heated Water, Compressed air... But also a spot for my laptop for movies or viewing pics I've taken while up there... GOOD/Great sounds, etc. ALL of which; 'If it can be 'built in', it will be', including fire extinguisher, emergency AA LED lights that I have, certain tools, recovery gear, etc.
4. Moving from my Zuk, eventually, toward either installing my 98 Dakota 56" Leaf Pack, OMEmu leaf pack, to get more travel in the rear, for the purpose of 'getting to' the some of those 'deep in' spots that I visit, like Hidden High Sierra Hot Springs. Already have mega travel Bj's up front and pretty decent travel for IFS, along with 2" of lift with spacers and relaxed T-bars, deleted Sway bar, etc.
5. Mounting the Con-Ferr and Lights thereon, along with brackets to mount the hi-lift, shovel, back-wedge for come'along and or winch(many spots have NO trees or super solid ground), smittybuilt 10K# 20' strap and Soft/Swiss Brand- Waterproof Roof Top Cargo/Luggage Carrier for the bulky/lighter things that I can free up space in the rear with.
6. Winch....
7. Eventually, if I can ever blow up this motor, lol..... 3RZ or MAYBE something economical/reliable that's coming up as a viable swap in the 'next things' realm, ya know? NOT AGAINST a TD, either.... Just a bit concerned about diesel swaps aside from Toyota or other 'VERY reliable' Japanese or other trusted builders.


The short of it is... I want a reliable, comfortable and SAFE "ADVENTURE/DD" rig, decent on milieage, with many amenities that will get me out of MOST trouble...AND that I can do 60+MPH on the moderate Washboard roads that seem to never end when heading out to the spots that I love most. AND, something that isn't 'ridiculous' for use at the more 'traveled' spots, either.

Aside from Toyota diesels, I'd also consider Mercedes. They have some excellent diesel engines as well. The OM617 is widely considered one of the most reliable engines produced. Plus you can easily find a donor vehicle with under 200,000 miles for pretty cheap, then you have another 800,000 miles before you have to swap in another engine ha ha.

Back to the diesels... Volkswagen makes reliable TDs too. Get good fuel economy too. Read up on the Passat. We're getting a 2013 in Feb (hopefully)

Yeah, ..... I think they'll look good. I'm thinking of going with the "hammered black" on them, like I did on the Downey Grill Guard. Was thinking of "Hammered Silver", as I have the chrome package and don't hate it like most people, lol... But my Con-Ferr I restored is Black/gloss. So, ... I guess black would be most practical? I thought about shooting the Con-Ferr again, 'Hammered Black'... (their Hammered Black is more like a freckled Gunmetal Gray.... People seem to like it on the Grill Guard... >>>>

 

Chef, I really enjoy seeing photos of your runner! Although i'm jealous of the discontinued grille guard... anyways! I really like it. Is your sway bay disconnected? If so, how do you like it? I may remove mine while dealing with the... blown head that my truck created... :/

Well, ....yes... I do have the sway bar removed.. It's in the garage... And, I really haven't had any drama since removing it. BUT, I do have all new BJ's, all new CA bushings, etc..... I know that's not going to replace the sway bar, lol... it's there for a reason. BUT, redeth will even tell you how shocked he is when seeing me take the canyons with it removed(on the nasty turns and such on the way up and through the mountains to go wheel)...

Thanks for the kind words... I love being able to make it look more crazy like this... and then just slap back on my 31's and SR5 Alum's.... and that looks good too! lol. (the latter sure rub less, ya know? ) haha.

I took my sway bar off too. It rides smoother now, there's more "flex" (I use that term loosely, it is IFS after all), and there doesn't seem to be much more roll in turns. And I have old ball joints and squeaky rotten old bushings LOL.
