I have always liked the look of the Rising Sun. When the idea first hit my noggin, I was goin to paint it on either side of the truck. But after playin around with paint on the computer, I didnt much like the idea of a whole side view. So the next best visible surface was the tailgate. Two days and three cans of paint later I had a wicked tailgate on my truck. I gotta find a new place for the lic plate tho. I have thought about the diff or eve right under the back window.

Here's how i bought her in early june 2011. Since then i've been working on rebuilding just about everything i can think of. Pending a frame swap and an engine rebuild hopefully!

(with my brother's 86 landcruiser in the background)

first camping trip down to cape, loaded up and ready to go!

Thanks! The trip was a BLAST! That truck is definately the ultimate adventure/camping vehicle by any stretch.
Sure black looks good, but your red goddess of a rig is stunning. Your exhaust pipe could put my whole runner to shame. Props to you for such an inspirational rig. Definately going to use your build thread when i do my rebuild.

. I'm just a normal dude trying to save money and realizing along the way, (WOW, it REALLY feels GREAT to be done with this, like anything, else, and then say, "I DID THAT!" lol....) And it feels even better when it WORKS!
HAHAHA. Have fun with the beast, man!

I just read this entire thread, and I figured I should post some pictures of my truck.
Its a 1990 4runner, with the 22re, 5 speed, 4 wheel drive. The ad on craigslist said $2,500, I called him up and he said $2,300, I went to test drive and I offered him 2,100. I knew from the first take off the clutch was about to go, but it shifted relatively well with all things considering. The motor pulled strong, and the a/c was cold. I felt that even with a bad clutch $2,100 was not bad for a 2nd gen with a 22re, 5speed, cold a/c with a pretty clean exterior and interior. I replaced the clutch within the first month, and then I realized the rear axle was leaking. So I replaced both axle seals and bearings, took out the 3rd member and resealed it, replaced the breather, and also replaced the pinion seal. After all of that the rear leaks no more. Recently the idle has been a little sporadic, so I am going to tackle that as soon as I can.
Anyway my plans for the near future are to get a new set of tires mounted on the 15x10s I already have. I have been checking craigslist every day for a decent set of 31's 33's or even 35's. I am on a bit of a budget, so I have to buy used for now. My plans for lift is pretty straight forward, bj spacers and lc coils, and if I get 35's a 2 in body lift. I found a set of 4.88's at pull a part, and I went back to get them the next day... gone!! So I am also keeping my eyes open for some gears and some manual hubs. I am also going to fix some of the dents and I am going to spray a cheap paint job on it, just because I hate the baby blue.
Here are some pics.

I had to take her out for a little 4x4 test. The 4 wheel drive works, but the tires suck! I got stuck in the second hole.

BTW here are some picture of my old 89

and here she is clean, man I miss that truck...

Let me know what you guys think.

Cool rigs, Robert-David!
Good find, pretty good price, granting no rust or major damage! Especially a 22re 5spd.... good find indeed, enjoy it!
