Possible Transmission Issues - Let's play online diagnosis!

91 22RE PickUp 5 spd

1st is fine
2nd is fine
3rd is fine
4th grinds and you can put it in 4th if you force it
5th is fine

In any gear when you let off the gas and let it slow down there is a distinct rumble from the tranny tunnel that sounds just like the same noise as a bad u-joint on the front driveshaft (if it were bad and the vehicle were in 4WD).

That is not the problem, just the same kind of rumbled noise it makes.

Anyway, just looking for ideas.

Sounds like the syncros in 4th are toast, or the bearing for 4th has given up.

4th gear usually isn't problematic on the 5speed toyota trannies though. However, if the trans was rebuilt previously, they likely didn't do anything about 4th gear parts, and it may have failed.

What about the rumbling roaring noise in deceleration in each gear? It is right there under the tranny tunnel.

I told him we could put in a new "used" one for peanuts, just trying to figure out what is wrong with this one and if it is worth tearing into.
