POLL: Who wants 22RE over 3VZE? Count me in!
Well, I could probably go on about it for hours.. I will try to be brief. I used to have a 4Runner with 22RE 4cyl and a standard. I now have a 3 VZE v6 automatic. After owning it and working on it for a while, there is just about nothing about this engine that I like. I want 22RE back.
Transmission choices aside, who else would prefer 22RE over 3VZE? Feel free to post with or without listing your reasons, but reasons would make it more interesting. Some of my reasons are
3VZE is a pain to work on
3VZE eats more gas than a V8, even when properly tuned, while providing power output of a 4 cyl
22RE is considerably better on gas under the same conditions
3VZE is hardly more powerful than 22RE, regardless of what the specs say, even though it is a V6
It is ugly and takes up the entire engine compartment, making accessing anything impossible - with all the stuff that they packed in that engine, you would think it would be better in some way?
Towing with 3VZE is only marginally, if at all, different from towing with 22RE
So much for being brief So, what's your pleasure?

I've had 2 '91 4Runners. A 2dr with the 22re and a 4dr with the V6. At this point I would choose the 2dr with the 22re. I still miss that truck. It was a base model but in very good shape.

The 22re rules. I have pretty moderate mechanical knowledge but was able to tear it apart and replace the headgasket in a day. It makes good power, gets good gas mileage, and is easy to work on...what more could you want?

I had both, and I'd still choose a 3VZE over the 22RE. Granted, I never had to tear the engine apart and replace a head gasket on the 3VZE, but isn't that saying something in itself?

if my truck were an extended cab I'd keep it forever, but it's not so it'd be nice if it were a 22re. better gas mileage.
I'd like to get an extended cab with the 3.0 and 4.56 gears, then I could just swap in a 3.4 when the 3.0 got tired.

22re for me. My first car was a 1987 4runner with a 22re and i sold it with 250K miles on the engine, still running fine it just had alot of body rust. I had a 90 4runner with a 3vze that burned oil like crazy, its engine blew due to low oil in october. Now I have a 94 4runner and it has the 3vze. I am going to keep my eye on the oil for this one.

I just picked up my first Toyota pickup, an 84 SR5 with 22RE. The reason why I chose this over other 2wd pickups was because of the engine & it only cost me $500Cdn. The best part is that it runs good, so I don't have to tear into just yet. When I do, I'll rebuild it with LC Engineering goodies.

Well I have both.my 87 with 33's and a bad motor is faster, better on gas and a lot cheaper to work on.I have had to put over 2000 bucks into my v6 within a year and about 200 in the 87 in 4 years.

I have never driven or even ridden in a 22RE Runner, but I'm certainly not disatisfied with the performance of my 3VZE. And last week, I cleaned out the throttle body and holy crap, there was a lot of holy crap in there. Now it gets off the line quicker, throttle reponse seems better and it starts immediately every time now...which it was, occasionally, having trouble with before. I think a properly tuned 3VZE will, except for the mileage, be a better choice. It's not a monster powerplant, but it works well in my Runner.
My vote is for the 3VZE.

Cost for repairs and parts are so much more than the 22re.My water pump for the 22re was 40 and I could do it myself. The v6 was more than 700 (had it done). The 22re still gets up quiker than my v6.I get over 300 miles to the tank in my lifted 87 22re and 200-230 in my stock v6.

3vze hands down.
I just swapped the waterpump, idlers, timing belt, coolant, belts, crank seal, oil, filter, thermostat, reset the timing to 10* BTDC, put in some 93 octane, and some octane booster....
My truck now leaves two 4" deep ruts 20 feet long in the hardpacked shell driveway when I stomp the gas....Low end torque of the 3vze is where it's at.
256,000 and climbing on the stock HG too.
19-20mpg on the highway too....
Ill keep my 3vze, but if yall want to get rid of yours just drop me a line!!
