Piston Slap?
Ok, This week we got a lot of rain and i headed down to an OHV area, and went threw a HUGE puddle, made it threw, but at the end it died. We got it running after a long and hard roll start, then came the horror. :pat: A loud slaping. I did clear out the cylinders of the water. I didnt have any power and i could feel really hard tapping on my clutch pedal and gas pedal, is this piston slap? Im looking at a rebuilt engine for cheap that i can build on. Or is it a bearing or something else? thanks

Im not sure, i don't think so, but could it be fixed w/o taking apart the head and what not? Do you know an average to get this fixed professionally? thanks.

Sounds like some major internal damage was done to the motor, probably a bent rod. If you feel the vibration through the clutch it's got to be vibrating more.
Piston slap is a distinct noise hear when the pistons move around laterally in the cylinder due to the cylinder bore having expanded(usually wear related) or due to the fact that the pistons have not expanded, as is the case on many race built motors with forged pistons.

If it is a bent rod (sure sounds like it) and you tear it apart now as opposed to continuing to drive it you may get by with just a rod and some bearings compared to a crank or block due to abnormal wear.

Same exact thing happened to me. Once I cleared all the water from the cylinders it threw a rod and cracked my block. Run it again and see if any kind of fluids pour out anywhere, then you will know if the block is good or not.

Did you clear the water from the cylinder before or after you restarted? How much came out of the spark plug holes? Ingesting water can do one of several things; the worst of which would be bending a rod; the next worst would be blowing a head gasket. It needs to be looked at by a professional before you start it again or you could do more internal damage.

I couldnt start it, the starter died after the puddle, so i let everything dry, took out the plugs, and cranked it, im not sure how much water but the 3rd cylinder was damn near full. So if i were to buy a rebuild kit from engine builder, what kind of machine work would be needed, if the block is good, after a bent rod? should i try to find a cheapo 22r rebuild it, and switch all of my 22re stuff over?
thanks

depending on your time frame you can pull yours out and tare it down see what work it needs. or by a bone yard 22re and rebuild it then just swap motors. Then you can tare down your old motor and see what it needs and if its worth rebuilding or just sell the parts.

thats what i plan on doing, this guy is gonna sell me a complete 22re w/ a bad valve, and needs some pumps. So can i use my valves? or do i need to get new ones? while i have the new engine out im gonna replace the timing chain, head gasket and everything else that doesnt need machine work.

You can't just swap valves from motor to motor, at the absolute minimum you'll need to lap the valves in, but most likely you'll need to take the head to a competent machine shop in your area and have it re-done, honestly there's no reason not to since you're already in there.
