Piston ring order

Does the "#1" ring go on the very top groove and the "#2" ring go second down, or is the other way around?

Also, is there an up and down side to each ring?

The oil rings are pretty self-explanatory.

PS: If it helps, I'm working with the Rock rings included in the ENGNBLDR kit.

I also used the engnbldr kit and I don't remember them having numbers on them.

Rule of thumb: if there is a taper on one side of the ring then it goes up. If there is no difference from one side to the other then it doesn't matter. I simply put the writing facing the top since there was no taper.

It sounds as though yours might be different from the ones I had. I would give Ted a call and ask him to be sure.

Also be sure that the gaps in the rings are staggered. I'm not sure it would be the end of the world but that's how I was told back in high school and it's what I've done since.

it would be the difference of pulling the motor apart to fix it after it has so much blow by

rings are numbered from top to bottom -- #1 goes in the top groove, #2 goes in the middle one, and the oil scraper and 2 keeper rings go in the bottom one. make sure the number, dot or symbol(depending on ring manufacturer) faces UP on the compression rings.

make sure to check your end gaps!

>>>*If you look closely, note the top groove in the pistons isn't as deep as the 2nd groove, so if you reverse them, they won't go into the bore because they will jam. The two rings have different widths.

But the top ring on the rock sets is a lighter color, it is a different alloy to help withstand combustion heat.

There should be the letters "rock" on the ring, that is to be installed up. Hope this helps....*EB

And make sure you "stagger" the ring gaps.
