Well this is a slightly embarrassing story about my truck but I need some help. If you want to skip the story, jump to the last line.

Like most of my stories, I was at Pick N Pull.
I had just finished pulling a front diff in 32C blazing heat (hot for Canada anyways) in full coveralls and jeans underneath.
It was a 4.88 diff, I had pulled the rear during my lunch break. I was hot and excited (not like that). I dropped the diff off in the bed, I put my keys in the ignition (I usually roll down a window when I do this), took off my coveralls and put my tools in my truck from the passenger side. I locked the door and shut it to get in from the other side.
*twinge*
I locked my keys in my truck. Doh.

I wasn't gonna wait around for AMA to show up and charge me an arm and a leg to unlock my door and destroy my door seals.
I decided to try to push the rear glass a bit to try and pop the latch. The rear glass is really flexible to I was hoping it would work.
Nope, it exploded. It coated my entire interior with glass slivers.

Now I have to replace the rear sliding glass. Grr. To finally get to my question:
- Can I replace the rear sliding glass without taking apart the entire window out and cutting the frame window frame?

 

I have a rear slider that needs a latch , that will be for sale soon-ish, if I ever get my one piece non slider.

I locked my self out poped latch luckly glass didnt break but need new latch

 

I should teach you guys all how to make a simple unlock tool you can keep on the truck!

Or maybe Ill make them. lol

 

They already have those. But you need a key to use it

 

get one of the spare key boxes that have the magnets on them and stick it under your truck somewhere on the on top of the frame. ive had one on my current truck for over a year without any problem of falling off or even moving. had it on my old truck too for about the same amount of time.

it saves alot of time and headache of trying to break into your truck which i have done many times on my cars which didnt have the spare key box. (stupid i know not to put one on my previous cars haha)

 

tell me o_o, i'm always forgetting when i'm at school.

 

What I meant was Im a certified auto unlock technician (a service my company offers), and the tool to unlock these pickups is relatively easy to make and use, with no damage to the sills or paint.

Of course getting caught with such a tool would get you charged with grand theft, and a minimum fine of $7500.00

So, maybe not.

 

A key box would be a wise investment but I'll get that after I get my window fixed.

Can someone tell me if I can install the rear sliding glass in my xtra cab truck without taking apart the window frame?

Nah, that takes like 10 seconds to a minute, depending on your experience..

Waaaaay easier tool to get in with. And no, it's not a brick.

I'm assuming it has something to do with a door hinge, or the locking mechanism?
Some type of forced-unlocker, or possibly a thingy that pry's the hinge off the little loop on the doorjam?

 

Well, I will say this: Tow truck drivers LOVE using this tool. Its probably the most simplest and easiest of all the tools to use, and most customers are pissed at the ease of it.

 

i keep a spare key in my wallet that way i dont have to worry about the magnetic box falling off.

 

I believe the whole frame and gasket come out. Then you put your old gasket on the new window and use the string trick to get it back in.

 

A magnetic key box is surely the way to go, it'll cost ya under $5 for the key and the magnetic box, the magnet is suprisingly strong, i was in a high speed rollover and the box/key was still there after the fact

 

i do not think you can replace just one pane with out mucking something up, my buddy works at a glass shop and states its an easy in and out job to replace the window/frame as a whole unit.

 

The Big Easy, Love it, and us it at work all the time.

 

Where I worked, we painted the cheat sticks pink for the new drivers that needed them. I think I used the "Professional Coat Hanger" maybe twice in the 3 years I drove wrecker, and I dont even carry it in my tools with my new company.

But on topic - my manual does show the glass pieces as removable. Doesnt the frame come apart once out?

 

now imagine if you lost your wallet you loose your money, cards, I.D. (has your address on it) and if it falls into the wrong hands somehow they now have the key to your vehicle and know exactly where you live at!. but any who, my magnetic box i dont think has ever even moved a inch. its propped on top of my frame next to a body mount. those little suckers have a pretty good magnet on them too so id be shocked if i had found it had fallen off.
