Hi, I have a 1986 Toyota pickup 4x4 and I'm trying to figure out if my model is a RN63, RN61 or Base. On the tag under my hood it says Model: RN61L-MRA and the beginning of my VIN is JT4RN63. I'm assuming my model is RN61 but what's the difference? Sometimes when I shop for parts online the only option is RN63 or Base. I'm confused.
My 86 Toyota shop manual for trucks and 4Runner lists the following frame designations:
RN50 Series
RN55 Series- Regular cab
RN55 Series- Extra cab
RN70 Series
RN75 Series
RN61 Series- Regular cab
RN61 Series- 4Runner
RN66 Series- Regular cab
RN66 Series- Extra Cab
No RN63, but there are a lot of RN63 listed trucks for sale. My 86 truck VIN states RN56, but no parts sites carry that so I use RN55.

Like wallytoo mentioned, it's located on the firewall. Very interesting that the site thinks my pickup is a 4runner. It lists RN61 and no RN63 yet every online store lists RN63 and no RN61.
My truck VIN says RN56 but no parts places use that number. I use RN55 when I have to. I go by 86 X-cab, 2WD, short bed when it matters for a part. I have no problems buying parts online using the website make/year/model criteria. The biggest difference seems to be 4WD vs. 2WD for parts.
Ignore the VIN. There is information in the VIN about your vehicle, but configured slightly different than the model number.( RN61L-MRA) and EPC data is based on model number, not vin number. Toyota Parts people today rely on Vin, but bitd we used model numbers 99%. We only needed the vin when the production date fell on a split, and we had to figure out which side of the split it fell on.
As far as the 4Runner frame issue, yeah, Toyota mixed the RN5#. RN6# truck parts data on the same microfiche with 4Runners bitd.
