i plan on making a safari basket for my pickup...BUT it will be mounted on the bed. The bottom of the basket will sit at the top of the bed. So i'lll have storage under it for gear and stuff...than a place for my spare on the basket. Whatever else i have can go on it aswell.

i've been searching for a good roof rack for my 4 runner for a long while. here is some little info i gethered.
1.) rain gutter is a big + for roof racks, if your truck has them, consider yourself a lucky guy, because you can find the gutter mount towers on ebay for dirtcheap. and it's mounted on the exterior so it won't cause the troulbes on the doors and weather guard.
2.) without the gutters, you need to have 4 or 2+2 doors in order for the roof rack towers to be clamped on. except 3.)
3.) aftermarket permanent roof mounted tracks are available, and after calling Yakima few times, that's what i bought couple weeks ago. in your case, you can buy the 42" tracks and if it's too long, you can cut it down to whatever you want to. then just add landing pad and control towers, crossbars, too. downside for this application is, well it's permanent, involves drilling the roof(no biggy). i'll try to put mine on this weekend if the rain stops.
if you have four doors, call yakima see if this setup would work:

note the coleman basket is not part of the deal. just to show how sturdy the rack is with a fullsize spare on top.
