Part number doesn't exist, how could that be?

I've got a Toyota ECT ECU from a 1987 4Runner that is an AISIN brand, Toyota part # 89530-35170. A search for this part # on Google as well as several Toyota parts websites including Megazip.net and ToyotaPartsDeal.com produced no results. Known ECT ECU part #'s are:
  • 89530-35070 (08/1985 - 01/1986)
  • 89530-35160 (08/1986 - 08/1987)
  • 84530-35080 (8/1985 - 01/1986) which was replaced by the 89530 - 35070
Since the part number 89530-35170 doesn't seem to exist, is it possible the label is a misprint where the -35170 was meant to be either -35160 or -35070? Any other possibilities?

This is quite possible. I remember coming across a part in the past with a part number molded into the plastic and nothing came up during a search. The part number was probably changed during production and never made it into the computer database.

What part number comes up if you call the dealer with your VIN?

It's a ghost number. I've never had this happen. I must be missing something.

89530-35160-84, which replaced 89530-35160 in a warranty repair. The -84 at the end indicates the part was re-manufactured.

I searched via Google - put the part number in along with Toyota.

Your other numbers came up with:
Toyota 89530-35160

Toyota 84530-35080
