Overdrive off question?
i have a 95 Runner, Auto, 3VZE 3.slo.
i'm a bit of a noObie i just bought my Runner a few months ago.
don't know if this is normal but i was towing my Snowmobile(weight Apox.w/t 600lbs)has a tranny cooler. so getting to the point i noticed when i disengage the overdrive she seems almost normal to my feel all lower gears shift through normal.... but as soon as i hit the highway driving about 100km (60mph) it doesn't seem to shift into the final drive(5th). Rpm Rev is at 3500-3800?!
is that normal?
thanks for looking!

overdrive is essentially your final (4th) gear. with it off, you wont shift into that gear. that way, at higher speeds, yes, you have higher RPMs, but you have more power because generally higher RPMs = higher power.

it depends on speed really. if youre going fast enough (you probably shouldnt be) to be in a good RPM range in your last (4th) gear, then thats fine. if youre hovering around the point between 3rd and 4th (OD) and it keeps shifting, just turn it off. you dont want to be constantly shifting nor would you get much power benefit from towing in the low range of your 4th gear. people have different opinions on this, but thats my perspective of it

I agree. Same with going up slight inclines... When my tranny is shifting from 3rd to OD all the time, i just turn it off. Towing should be the same.... If your going downhill at a high speed... why run at higher RPM's? to waste gas and add extra engine wear? Turn it on, save some gas and help the environment.
But if your shifting all the time just turn it off until your in a place that you have enough power to maintain it in over drive. (flat or downhill... actually not 100% for a 3.0, you have less power)
