Overdrive intermitent

Hi all I have a 89 4runner 4x4 V6 auto tranny that has been giving me a slight problem. When driving as soon as it tries to go into O/D, it seems to slip or drop into neutral. If I turn off overdrive, it drops back a gear and works. But it is not doing this all the time, so I am a little confused as to what is causing this. I have changed out the fluid and filter and it still does this. Electric problem maybe? Any help would be great or advice. Thanks in advance.

Eric

I am not sure, all the other gears work good, or does that not matter? Trans not my strong point.

The first thing to do is rule out electrical problems which would be solenoids. Unplug the computer for the tranny, it's under the radio at the front of the console. L will be 1st, 2 will be 3rd and D will be OD. You will not have 2nd gear because the 1-2 shift solenoids will be turned off, and torque convertor lockup will be off too. If it still slips in OD, the clutch pack is probably bad.

okay, so far driving it with computer off it has not caused me any problems slipping or such. does this mean the computer is bad? or the solenoids bad, and where are the solenoids located? thanks for all the help!

I forgot to ask, before you unplugged the ECT, did it do the same thing in normal and power mode? You have to drain the fluid and remove the pan to get to the solenoids. The torque convertor lockup solenoid is the you to probably check. If it was a electrical problem with it the OD light would flash, if it is a mechanical problem with the solenoid, you will not get a code.

and the problem could be inside the torque convertor, but most likely you would feel it in 3rd also.

4runnerx3.....Great info, just a quick question though. If torque coverter lockup is off when the tranny computer is unplugged, then how would it slip in OD? I thought that OD was when the TC locked up? Not 100% sure though. Just asking because this is interesting and you seem to know this tranny....which I have by the way.

Thanks.

i will have to try it with the power button, as for the OD light, it has not flashed at all during this problem. it is a wierd problem, cause it will not happen right away, or sometimes it will. there is no regular pattern or such with it. thanks for the figure and info!
