Over Drive

Hey guys I am having a problem with my over drive button. The button does not work. When I am driving on the highway and I come up to a hill and I need to cut the overdrive I can't, the button does nothing. The light on the dash comes on and off but that is it. Do you guys have any ideas? Its an 86 4Runner with 22re

Bump.... Anybody have any ideas? Is there an over drive relay? Like I said the light will go on and off but nothing happens with the tranny. The transmission will shift into overdrive by itself but I am unable to controll it with the button?

Thats right, it will kick down at 60mph but any speed over that and it will not kick down

once you know youre in 4th (count the shifts), turn OD off and see if it kicks down. i was always able to do this under non-fast acceleration after getting to around 40 mph

Sounds to me like your OD is never turning on in the first place...

I could be a solenoid in the tranny that is opearted by that switch. BUt, that would be a wild guess.

I do think the O/D is engageing because at 75 or 80 on the highway it cruses fine. When the O/D button worked and I had it off at 65 or 70 the RPM's would be really high. I am not sure about the solinoid thing because the overdrive engages when a combo of the trany solinoids are off and on. Since the thing shifts fine through all other gears I dont think there is a bad solinoid. What about some kind of relay? Is there an O/D relay?

Can the switch still be bad even if the light is going on and off? Also in the Haynes manual it says that there is a O/D relay but it dosen't say where it is. Does anyone know?
