Original plug wires

90 4Runner: I was noticing a few months ago that all of my plug wires are original.Still trying to get my mind around that.All the wires have 1990 printed on them.Vehicle starts with a bump of starter.However when first starting it lately I get a rough idle and sputtering when I take off.When I get a couple miles down the road it smoothes out and runs great the rest of the day.Seems to only do it after a heavy rain and wont ever do it after the initial morning start.Im just curious about that and what you guys think about 20 year old plug wires.

Haha just tune that puppy up. I think its about due for one anyways haha. I bought some NGK's for something like $27 ( way cheaper then my honda thats for sure haha )

Yeah,lol,should tune it up even though it starts easily.Might even have improved power and gas mileage.Maybe I will be shocked at the difference.

cap prob has a crack ... id go to www.sparkplugs.com get a set of ngk wires and ngk v grove plugs use YTECH10 to save a few bucks.. for the rotor and cap just get one at the parts store may as well get a air filter too

Ok I just changed plug wires,cap and rotor.You guessed it Elton,not only was the cap cracked in 2 places all the way thru but both were burnt.Cant believe I just now changed those 3 things out. My 4Runner runs better now : -) Feel tad bit stupid for not doing it 9 months ago when I bought it.

Oh btw I used Borg Warner Select nascar performance plug wires,cap and rotor.

Those sound all nice and stuff.....

IF you continue to have strange little problems try OEM stuff, these little motors seem to like them more, according to the wisdom on this site.

I'm all for nostalgia, but I think it's time to send those wires to a museum and get yourself a fresh set of Densos for the next 20 years. Get part # from sparkplugs dot com and search for denso and the part # on amazon for the best price. I've learned in 15 years of owning my truck that nothing else works as well as the factory spec Denso ignition parts. Those Japanese engineers really got that part of the motor right.

Yeah your right,but after replacing 20 year old wires and cracked/burnt cap/rotor it runs better.Borg Warner wires $28.99 cap $13.49 rotor $4.99,total with tax $51.00.The old cap and rotor had "made in Italy" on them.

So far Im very pleased and have better acceleration.Will let you guys know if anything changes.Im not against Denso I just wanted a name brand that was available now.I did the job in one hour.

Truthfully, I haven't noticed much difference in brand of cap. But for wires, plugs and rotor, Denso definitely performs better, especially after a few thousand miles. And they outlast the other brands.

I need to get to this soon, 220,000 and still all origional cap, rotor and wires. But it runs perfect so no big rush for me...

Original cap and rotor????? Good grief! The terminals inside the cap in particular get pretty corroded even by 30k miles. I replace them with my plugs at 30k.

Oh I totally agree they need to be changed and I am on borrowed time. I guess I am lucky nothing has happened yet.

The Denso wire set on Amazon is $20.09 with free ship (if total order over $25). Ignore the Denso pics on Amazon, they're generic. If the part # is right you'll get the right set.

I don't see the Denso cap & rotor on amazon, and their Denso W16EXR-U plugs are crazy pricey. autohausaz.com and rockauto.com both carry the Denso plugs for under $1.50. autohausaz gives free ship if order over $50. rockauto shipping is cheap. rockauto actually sells the denso wires for $15.09: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...,parttype,7224

Two other excellent Japanese-made brands are Daichi and "Japan" brand; autohausaz sells the latter for really cheap prices. autohausaz is a great vendor that has the best prices on Aisin parts of any place I've found. The "Gold" distributor caps from autozone are excellent but are pricey at $19.

A good source for the Denso parts is World Toyota/Scion of Atlanta, which sells the cap for $11.56 and the rotor for $6.64. Their price on the plugs is probably reasonable (but they seem not to be listed in their catalog). The wires are pricey, $43.79, but they do come with all the keepers, which the aftermarket Denso set doesn't, I think. World shipping is $9.50. They also sell the 90915-YZZD3 taller oil filter for a megacheap $3.56.

snobdds your cap and rotor are cooked.They are cheap to replace.I took my old cap off(plug wires still attached).Put new rotor and cap on.Then replaced each plug wire(one at a time)so as to not cross them.Worked out to where no thinking was involved,lol.
