Open element filters and mud

This just seems like a really bad combo. I often get muddy water droplets splashed up on my K&N, is this something to worry about much? I don't see particulate going through the filter any easier due to the different medium (water vs air) but I'd like to know what you think about this matter.

I wouldn't worry too much. I ran a K&N for almost 4 years without "recharging" it. Why? I didn't know it was a K&N until I joined this site...then I didn't find out you had to recharge it until I sold it.
I did almost almost hydrolock my truck once, but it would have sucked water in regardless...

no it was on the filter when I bought it; it's open on the end, and there's a cone filter inside of it

not really; it's about a 4.5" opening at the end

I have an experiment for you that will make you never use a K & N again. take your airbox or open elemnt K&N and duct tape it to a wet/dry vacuum hose. turn on the vacuum and dump some sloppy mud or dust on the filter. Then look at all the crap that gets into the vacuum cleaner. Then try the same with a factory Toyota Filter.

While it may help it breath better it lets in more of everything, not just clean air.
