Ill borrow my neighbors light tomorrow, Its wierd that it just died while driving though and that if i hold the key in start that it runs. Il have to have someone hold the key while i check the timing.

do this first, #1 cylinder at TDC. crank at 0 and see what the distributor is at.. take off the cap and see if the rotor is at 1# on the cap.

best way ive found, take the #1 spark plug out try to get your finger in the spark plug hole area.. its really tight but i somehow made due with my massive hands.. you'll need two people for sure, you'll want to turn the crank clockwise and feel for the air pushing out of the spark plug hole. at that point, turn slowly until the crank lines up 0 with the notch on the balancer. Its worth a shot

well timing is good. There is a LOT of stuff that i have checked. Im just gonna take it in, hopefully tomorrow if i can squeeze it in I have 2 hours between work and school. This thing is beyond my knowledge and its coming up on three weeks of no truck and its my DD so thats the best bet for me right now.
I wrote up a paper of what i have checked and replaced, and some observations to try to deter the shop from trying to screwing me over since Im only 16. Had a really bad experience with two different mechanics on two occasions.

Have you replaced the AFM with a known good one? I would lean toward AFM or a bad ignitor. I had a bad ignitor that would run fine for a few days then all of a sudden give me issues. It would start fine when cold, but not at all when warm.

The ignitor will cut fuel as well at start up, so even if you have spark, it will not send a signal to the ECM to fire the injectors.

This is easier if you just use a pencil or dowel rod~

Yeah, timing doesn't just go all of a sudden unless you break the belt, and then it won't run at all. GOod luck with it, let us know what it turns out to be. Strange issue.

Doing much better than I would've at 16!

thanks TN rabbit. And jbtvt, thanks, I have been working on it for a while. did the head gaskets with my dad, and ever since i have been working on it and getting better and better with it. I also figured that about the timing belt and my distributor bolt wasnt loose or anything.

Have you looked through the FSM, in the troubleshooting section? Do you have the FSM or need a copy? I have one I can email you.

One other IDEA that I read, but might have missed it in this thread...But have you checked or replace your actual ignition switch? You said the truck will run if you hold the key on. I've seen an ignition key and set of door locks all NOS or OEM on bay for a decent price here and there.

well the stealership thinks its the ECM I have a spare and it didnt make a difference so i either have two bad ECMs or they are givving me crap. But the good news is that if it ends up not being the problem i wont have to pay for the part.
