oil pump replacement...
Well my truck has developed a leak over the last year. I thought it was coming from the oil pan but today when I was about to leave my house I noticed that there was a unusually large spot of oil under my truck. I popped the hood and it looked like it was coming from the timing chain cover. I called 2 shops and they both said the oil pump needs to be replaced and that its a common problem on 22re's. Is that true? If they replace the oil pump do they take off the front of the motor so I can have them replace the timing chain and guides? Sorry about the newb questions!! Thanks

DON'T DO IT! THEY ARE TRYING TO SCREW YOU!
that is NOT your oil pump going out, it's most likely the front main seal. all you need to do is remove the belts, pull the harmonic balancer off the front of the engine, and removing the old seal and installing a new one. if you like, you can get a seal-n-sleeve kit, which contains a sleeve that you drive over the snout of the pulley/balancer, which covers up the groove that the seal often creates. the hardest part of the job is breaking the crank bolt loose, pull the coil wire and put a breaker bar with a 19mm socket up against the bottom of the passenger side frame rail, and bump the starter. should pop it loose.
i don't think i've ever heard of a 20R/22R/22R-E oil pump failing, there isn't a lot to fail! over decades of use they do lose their efficiency, but seldom fail. instead of being out $50-100 on a new oil pump, you're only gonna be spending $5 on a new seal.

Thats very interesting but great information. Well the first shop I called they said its a very common problem and it would be 350 to replace. I then called a Toyota specialist and said the same thing and will only charge $175. My cousin who is a mechanic came over to look at before I called and said its my timing chain cover and oil pan he would charge like 1500. So thats no option of me!

I took my truck to the shop today and they said it was leaking from the front main seal and oil pump seal. They replaced both for 150 which I thought was a decent price. No more leaky rig!!!

How long would it really take because dont you have to pull the radiator out and the pulley off just to get to the oil pump assembly? I have to do the same thing and the fsm is even saying pull the oil pan which doesnt make ssense to me but could you give me a better description how to remove the oil pump?

Haha yeah its an old thread but thanks to this and a couple other ones I got my truck all apart in about 15 minutes and I just gotta wait for the parts to get here tomorrow but my seal and o ring were just like plastic so I feel comfortable that replacing them will fix my leak. Thanks for clearing things up
