Odd Starting Issue - 1986 22RE 4Runner Auto
I have a 1986 4Runner auto that h as an intersting starting issue. Every once in a while when I go to fire up, usually after running into a store for a minute, it'll act like it's still in gear. There's a wire ran from the start side of the starter by the previous owner that I can touch to the positive batt. terminal and it will fire right up with the key in the on position.
I'm thinking it's the nuetral saftey switch from reading around, but wanted to get feedback from you guys before I start changing out parts that aren't the problem.
I'll be happy to clarify if needed.

sounds like the neutral safety switch alright, those are spendy lil units too usually. Have you checked the switch itself yet? My 90 runner had an issue similar to that, when it wouldn't start in park position, it would usually start when i put it into neutral, then that started to fail also. I ended up pulling the switch out, and discovered it had some moisture in it. I used an airgun from a air compressor, blew it out real good, put it back together and that seemed to fix the issue. Of course i sold it 4 months later, toyota and automatic didn't seem to go well together for me, lol.
